My students recently did a research project on an animal and they were allowed to pick the animal they wanted to do. It's something small, but this is an example of agency. It lets the kids choose what they're interested in. They really enjoyed it.

At my campus, we often have discussions of celebrations our students may be celebrating because of the student population. In addition our students share their own home culture. Most recently we made connections to their language. In a lesson over Fiesta Foods, one of my students shared that the work Shish Kabob was similar in Pharsi. I then learned he spoke 6 other languages. We spoke further and discussed how Counting in Pharsi and French were a bit similar.

Reading Headstrong was so insightful on women in science who have not been recognized in our curriculum. There’s 52 women listed in the book. It was required reading in a college class and I loved it so much I gifted one to my daughter-in-law who is in the STEM field.

Autobiographical grounding is using your own, as well as your students', experiences in the curriculum. I think making critical reflection discussions is important for a classroom. This gives an opportunity to allow everyone in the class to share freely, and openly, about the topics being discussed in the class, or outside of class, and how they're connecting it to the course content. This gives your students the opportunity to listen to other diverse perspectives from the class.

I can introduce books, videos, and other resources that celebrate diversity and showcase different cultures and countries. I Could mark important cultural holidays and celebrations from around the world throughout the school year. This could involve decorating the classroom, learning about traditional customs, and even trying out some cultural activities or crafts!

Women in science and any field of study getting credit taken away from them for their contributions to their field just to have their male counterparts take the glory essentially. Ex. Rosalind Franklin, who actually discovered the structure of DNA, it was given to Watson and Crick.

Example of implementation in the future:

Take the opportunity in class to discuss the other side of traditional history that is taught in curriculum. It can be implemented in the lesson, provide opportunities for own student researcher, or simply provide books that can touch on subject.

I.e. Native American experience, slavery and Thomas Jefferson, colonization in various countries, etc.

My students are doing a research paper where they got to choose a person, animal or thing that they wanted to research and write about. This gave them agency in their own learning in picking something they were interested in.

In my classroom, last week we had an inventory for social studies and science. A slide about culture came up. The students got so excited to talk about their culture and religion. We spent the last 15 minutes talking about the many cultures they are a part of, and the types of celebrations they do. Once we told the students that we would go more in-depth in a few weeks they were so happy.

At my clinical campus they do an amazing job of teaching about holidays from all over the world and they read books and do activities that are apart of those cultures celebrations and ive learned so much from them myself.

Women Oppression

One of the first things that I think of Women Oppression is a movie that I watched called Hidden Figures. I think this would be a great thing to talk about in class since it is a story about 3 Black Women who contributed so much to NASA that I had never even heard of prior. We can incorporate this into our classroom by teaching the importance of giving credit where it is due.

My school does a living history museum where the students research and prepare a speech as if they are their chosen historical figure. There can only be one of each historical figure so that as many people are covered as possible.
