Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is used to help with infection (as well as HIV medications) every day. ART can't cure HIV, but it helps people who have HIV live a longer and healthier life. People with HIV should start using ART as soon as possible. ART is recommended for anyone with HIV.

ART also helps reduce the risk of transmission. The main goal of ART is to reduce a person's viral load to an undetectable amount, which means the amount of HIV in the blood is too low to be detected by a viral load test. Those who obtain an undetected viral load have effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to their HIV-negative partner through sex.
