Students come to school with different backgrounds, sets of experiences, cultural contexts, and world views. Issues of diversity play a role in how students and teachers view the importance of the classroom and what should happen there. Students may perceive that they do not “belong” in the classroom setting — a feeling that can lead to decreased participation, feelings of inadequacy, and other distractions. Teachers may make flawed assumptions of students’ capabilities or assume a uniform standard of student performance.

First, because becoming aware of the global nature of our lives brings the diverse nature of humanity to our consciousness. The increased mobility of people – either for work, leisure/pleasure, economic, political, religious reasons, or because people flee from war or natural disaster – keeps bringing more and more people into closer contact with the Other and that has not only a strong impact on the way we see and perceive the others, but also on the way we see ourselves.

Thus, it is necessary that we, as individuals, learn how to make sense and manage the implications of our sense of identity and how to cope with diversity. In order to do so, in order to be able to redefine the common denominator for living together, we need to address cultural diversity, and there is no better place to start doing it than at schools, as I see it, because education is the basis for preparation for life. If we learn and teach how to deal with cultural diversity in schools, then people will be prepared to deal with it for life, I think.

Here we do not really have multicultural students at a primary or secondary level. There are only a few students at my school, whose parents come from different countries. I truly believe that one of the most important things that we have to teach our students is how to get along with each other. How is this possible to co-exist in today's world without accepting the different? Well, I am not that experienced in dealing with diversity because I’ve been teaching in a rural area for a long time and have few migrants, but am looking forward to learning and sharing.

In the past few years, migration and diversity have become more and more relevant in politics and therefore in our classrooms, with the free circulation of people and goods, and more recently, with refugees escaping war zones– not to mention with easier and faster means of transportation.

While it is true that there are varied documents ensuring equal rights, the truth is that respect and tolerance should be the core and thus taught / learned from a very young age. Because our students’ and their parents’ backgrounds are so different, it is up to the school and teachers who have this diversity all together to bring those precious concepts in and teach students so that experience it first hand and act accordingly throughout their lives.

In the Maltese context, cultural diversity is quite a recent phenomenon. It is safe to say that we have been caught unawares and as teachers, and as an education institution, we are not well prepared to address the multitude of diversities that are present in our classrooms and communities. It is particularly for this reason that we need to talk about diversity in our classrooms, and not just with our students, but with the whole community in which we teach - be they students, parents, other staff and the community in which the school is situated. I'm interested because schools I worked in (italian public schools) had no "cultural diversity" plans or projects. They offered some base literacy to newly arrived and most often students were introduced to class groups just because of their age and not according to their knowledge of italian language.

Even now, in my cuurent school there's no "cultural diversity" project to support integration. There's no actual sharing of points of view/experience/culture meant as a school plan to promote cultural diversity values.

Integration and "cultural diversity" are meant as something to deal with - each teacher on his own - as part of individual teaching plans.

I trust I can learn more about "cultural diversity" attending to this online course and share newly aquired knowledge (valuing experiences from other european teachers) with all colleagues.

My hope is to introduce a "cultural diversity" plan that will involve the whole school. And (why not?) propose a base literacy programme for adults, to involve (foreign) parents too.

Since I was very young I've always been interested in meeting people from other coutries and knowing more about their language, culture, traditions and lifestyles. Even now, when it's possible, I try to travel around Europe and other continents to meet and learn about other people. Despite the number of migrant students in my school is growing nobody has planned yet a way to cope with this problem in order to create the best conditions possible for their integration. I think that all the students have the same rights to be trained and to access knowledge so teachers and Heads must do something to let that happen. Moreover, diversity is a common value for European schools because it has to do with respect of human rights and also because it gives us the opportunity to improve ourselves as people.

I've been always interested in cultural diversity, since when I was a child and I used to travel through Europe with my family. It was extremely interesting to me meeting different culture, habits, lifestyles. Even different food! Being a language teacher in a primary school in the surrondings of a big city, I now face the challenge of multicultural classrooms, with many pupils coming from abroad. Many of them come from a tragic story of immigration, sometimes illegal, with a dramatic escape from war and poverty.
The number of foreign pupils in our schools is growing and growing due to the international problems that involve the near East countries.
In my experience, the first thing we can do as teachers is to help these pupils to feel welcome and safe in their new country. They often don't know a word of our language, so we need to find different ways to communìcate with them.
It's important that children understand the value of cultural diversity and that they must not be afraid of people with different habits.

Everbody knows that Greece is facing an immigration crisis the last years, especially since the war in Syria started. Thousands of people, persecuted mainly by war, reach out greek coasts dreaming to take refuge and be integrated, safe away from their countries. Greek education has to correspond to their needs, to embrace them and give them the best possible, in order to alleviate their drama and help them cope with the new circumstances. Hello, My name is Zorica Salijevic and originaly I am from Belgrade, Serbia but for last 11 years I am living in Stockhom, Sweden. I am a writter and journalist abut for a last 7 year I was working as a teacher for small children in kindergarden, who have a diffrent backgrounds. Now, from this month I start my "practice" work in one school for grown up people, imigrants who came to Sweden and they have to learn Swedish. I am working with analphabets and with them who can read and write a little on they own language. I attend this course because I found this as a great oportunity to learn my self as a teacher how to help them to learn them selfs Swedish, to combine they own culture and Swedish culture. My idea is to help them to use all diffrences in the classroom and to made them a great ground to become a active in Swedish sociaty. There is a lot of imigrants here in Sweden and for them, me as one person who is not Swedish, can be a good roll model to learn one very difficult language for them as Swedish is and to integrate in Swedish society. We can learn from each othe a lot and that is what inspire me to take this course.

i've always been interested in this subject, since I was a child, I think. I've been observing how fantastic it is that we all are different in our stories and backgrounds, and personalities of course, and at the same time we have so much in common. For a lot of time I was sure that everyone saw this extraordinary thing, so for me the challenge has been to realize that there are also people who can't recognise this item as a enrichment, but often they couldn't even conceive that someone could be, think or act in a different way from theirs. This is my main prejudice and at the same time a challenge. At school this is evident: we (all of us, teachers, students, parents, all the other workers at school) have to learn to face this wonderful yet sometimes difficult thing.

It was a relaxed laugh after one hour spent sitting on her chair without any movement of her body or sound from her mouth. As I have already mentioned in my brief presentation, for the last three years I work in Brussels, which is a multicultural city, in of the European Schools, which are also multicultural and multilingual school environments, where teachers and pupils from different European countries co-exist, work together and are educated together. In the nursery level, teachers must be able to help their pupils to learn to respect their own cultural heritage and that of the other children. So, I feel that this course is useful for me, as it is harmonized with the mission of the school.
Besides all these, me as a person, I believe that cultural diversity has an important place in the school planning because in our society, in every country and workplace (including schools) you can find various cultural, racial and ethnic groups. We, certainly, can learn from each other, on condition that we develop a good level of understanding about each other. This can help us collaborate and cooperate. Learning about each other's culture enriches our knowledge of the world, and helps us reject and abolish stereotypes and biases. When you recognize, you can also learn to respect the ways of others. I think the point is to create citizens aware that we are all different and all equal.

It is very important for me to improve my teaching skills. In our school we used to have some students with diverse cultural background, like roma. But nowadays the number of multicultural students is hugely increased. It is critical to manage to integrate harmoniously these students in school and generally in greek society. last year I was teaching in a school with a lot of Erasmus projects, for example one of my students had one year in a school of the USA, and we were hosting a girl from USA (she wasn't a student of mine) and another girl from Ecuador that was in one of my classes. Therefore I experienced both having a student abroad, studing in a different educational system and a different culture and having students from other countries. I have to say that the italian student coming back from USA was really changed after that experience and brought his enthusiasm and his grown knowledge about other cultures and lifestyles to all the classmates, he was more active in school's projects and more opened to Erasmus students . While the girl from Ecuador met some difficulties in bringing her knowledge and her culture in her italian class. I believe this is because italian educational system is still at a just-born stage with regard to intercultural experiences and intercultural exchanging.

I find this video on YouTube...It is a simple and nice explanation of the different cultures we can meet in our everyday life. And I strongly believe we have a lot to learn from each inhabitant of the crowded village where we live. That is the reason why I think it is important to show students that diversity is an asset and not an obstacle, and in which ways it can enrich us all. Even if mutual understanding might be challenging, it is worth the effort. And that is another key message we should convey to our students. Sometimes meeting and accepting different cultures might seem difficult, but that is not a good reason to give up. Cultural awareness is one of the 8 European Key Competences and it is also fully integrated into Italian school curricolo. It is important to introduce young learners to cultural diversity, to think about the world outside small towns (very common in South Italy). Foreign students are increasing also in these parts of the Country. We need to include them and help them and their families. Young people should't be afraid to meet the others.
As we teach we try to use a lot of visuals, a lot of student discussion, translated key words, sentence/writing frames and so on to help those students. We also have started to meet families to come in to understand about how the education system works.

My school is away from big cosmopolitan centers. So far we don’t have any immigrants. I teach to monolingual, monocultural classes. However, my job is much more exciting since I’ve been working on European projects. This style of work demands collaboration with other European teachers. I think is very important to adress cultural diversity in schools for two main reasons: schools are istitutional and social places, the most important ones for children (and they're meaningful even in parents'life. Children spend there most of their time and have social relationship, they learn to beahave with other people, to deal with differences and to practice tolerance. Children build up their personality, so it's important to offer them specific keys that can help them see cultural diversity as a wealth not an obstacle in their relationships. The second reason is that adults usually live (at least here in Italy) avoiding exchanges with people from other countries, and the lack of human contact can increase prejudices and hate. On the contrary students share most of their time together at schools: they have to collaborate often and have the possibility to know that small differences are not walls in human relationships. A positive environment is need by all them. So, I really bealieve that developing intercultural competence among children is the way to get a more open and tolerant society and a brighter future.

My country changed over the last 20 years. Even when I entered a classroom for the firs time as a teacher, in 2001, all pupils I had were Italian. This is no longer the case now, in any type of school you will hardly find one-culture classes.
We welcome children from different countries and they learn how to live in our culture, but at the same time we are the learners, as we get a chance to find out more about their background and, what is more important, we develop cultural awareness and sensitivity, we no longer take it for granted that our "opinions" (but sometimes it might be commonplace) work for anyone.

Soon I'll move to the Netherlands, Amsterdam and the city is well-known from its cultural diversity. I think it's crucial to address cultural diversity in the classroom because pupils have the opportunity to confront directly with their peers who can maybe find "different" at the very beginning, so they can build a solid positive idea of diversity as a tool for growing together. In my opinion, we should analyze another aspect of the implications of cultural diversity in today's society: on the other way round, instead of seeing it as a "weapon" of possible misunderstandings, it can be presented as the best tool to maintain different points of view and traditions, in a world where we are progressively starting to live all of us in the same way. How can we face this questions when lots of migrants can't feel safety in our classrooms? What is "feeling safety" for everyone? some time ago, I boy of primary school, I think he was 8 years old, said to me that he couldn't go on coming to school because he did not feel safety in it. I asked to him why, he simply answered: " I don't know who are all these new people in my school. It does not seems my school, it seems a welcome home."
Really, I couldn't say anything inmediately. I had to take a breath and then I ask to other children if they felt in the same way. Almost did not have the same opinion, but there was a number of students of that class, that think so. Their opinions were not 100% theirs, they had listened comments at home and at school. they listened to other people saying things like that. So, in that moment I think that they had to listened other opinions, and I asked to foreing students,, who where since 3 or 4 months with us, which was their opinions. They also thought that they did not feel safety all time at school, because they either did not know anyone.
At the end, everyone realised that the difference was an opinion, and that they could change that scond the place from where they were speaking .
Children showed to me that they could solve this difference of opinion talking, and finding out that often the problem is the same for everyone, and all together can find the solution for everyone.

Looking at the posts on this padlet, it seems that the interest in cultural diversity in the classroom is a "hot" topic especially in the Mediterranean area of Europe... It's a pity we cannot exchange ideas with colleagues of other countries of Europe.
I understand that "cultural diversity" and "migrants" are intertwined problems...or should I say "resources"? As I see it, every modern society is just the result of centuries of "migrations" all through the world. I think humanity wouldn't even exist, if the first men hadn't started to move from one place to another.

Intercultural competence is a very important skill that teachers and learners need in order to build positive relationships and create an emotionally safe learning environment. For instance, a simple gesture like a thumb-up can lead to a misunderstanding between people from different cultural backgrounds: taken as a sign of approval in many European countries, it is taken as an offence by people from Afghanistan (the latter use it in the same way as others do with a middle finger). There are a number of similar examples! Those include not only gestures but also eye-contact patterns, physical distance patterns, waiting time patterns in spoken language while taking turns or responding to questions, and more. Successful communication in modern society is impossible without intercultural competence.

As for school staff (teachers, support workers, etc.), they should take cultural diversity into account at every stage of planning teaching and learning activities, e.g. selecting or designing resources requires careful consideration of the content (some might be case-sensitive, others may trigger an argument between people from different cultures), visual aids, and even teacher language (both verbal and non-verbal) and movement in the classroom.

There are many forms of diversity in the classroom. I am taking the course because it is important for a teacher to know the different attitudes of loneliness and distress. There aren’t many immigrant students in my school and I see few immigrant students, second generation, attending school successfully. There are other aspects of diversity. My students belong to a linguistic minority group. This group try to promote a positive image of minority language. At the European level, linguistic diversity is seen as a patrimony that must be protected, but it's not true! Our students don’t see the maintenance of minority languages as a priority but as an inconvenience especially for families socioeconomically and culturally disadvantaged. For this reason, teachers must work to create a relaxed atmosphere in the classroom. I see classroom climate as a major determiner of classroom behavior and learning. I think it is necessary understanding how to establish and maintain a positive classroom climate especially to improve the relationship with/among students. I think it is very useful for teachers to have a support!

I think that true tolerance can be achieved mainly through school education. When we are open minded as teachers and capable of making our students know that the beauty is in every culture (but even the ugliness)...we are contributing to a better world. In the South of Spain, Where my school is, we found many difficulties working with students from different countries and cultures. There are muslims, that are Spanish, who speaks the language, but sometimes they don't even know our alphabet.
Anglophons are many, and sometimes the point is that at home they only speak English. Their parents never learn our language because they don't need to.

I believe that this course is important becose the teachers need to see the problems from different points of view. and it is possible only by confronting other teachers experience. For me, in our classrooms is important to work on dialogue among boys. Through dialogue they discovered cultural diversity. But the dialogue is not easy and spontaneous, it needs stimulations and educational methodologies. So I thing is important to learn about cultural diversity.

It is true. We have a really important job to teach acceptance to young children, but sometimes I think they are the true teachers. If you look closely to very young children it is not in their nature to criticize, judge or refuse other children. We learn to do that as we grow older and hear other people around us. So many times, children can be a model for us, adults.

the different cultures in the school is a good way to learn each other. learn tradition, culture etc not only from book but in the real life. This school year I work in a school with migrants! It is a Lyceum School and students don't speak Greek neither English!
A difficult situation and challengeable teaching as well!
