9-Line Biking Trail

The 9-line biking trail divides the northern and southern stretches of the Glendale neighborhood along what is roughly considered 900 South. The pathway was once an active railway that later fell out of usage and remained desolate for years. Within the last three years, this abandoned track was converted into an asphalt bike path that now connects Redwood Road with the extensive Jordan River Trail. While the conversion was a welcome developmental change in the neighborhood, there is still much to be done with this project and progress has been slow-going; additionally, the increased access to surrounding neighborhoods from the Jordan Trail has been a double-edged sword. Parts of this path, particularly closer to Redwood, are secluded and entirely unlit through the night; this has resulted in an increase of urban squatting on the part of Salt Lake City's growing homeless population in certain parts of the trail, rendering some stretches dangerous for passing, especially after dark or solo. This area would benefit from more streetlights and facilities. Aesthetically, this area would benefit from a greater variety of flora.

Supermercado

Supermercado has been an active local grocery store in this community over the course of the last 20 years. On Google maps, this store carries the name of Tejeda's Market, while the sign on the front of the structure reads "My Neighborhood Grocery Store." Locals who pay patronage to this location praise it for its convenient location and abundance of products imported from Mexico. Potential deficits include its early closure hours, lack of staff, and pot-hole filled parking lot. Some community members ultimately decide to trek further to the Smith's store on 900 W. for greater access to more general products typical of most grocery stores in the US; to some, Supermercado seems more like a specialty import store rather than a neighborhood grocery. The slot machines near the front of the store could potentially reflect poorly on the market's legitimacy.

The Hook & Ladder

This family-owned sit-down burger joint is a Glendale classic and has remained a frequented novelty since as long as many local residents can remember. The restaurant displays memorabilia reminding visitors of the neighborhood's connection with The Sandlot (1993) and the fire station that was once located on the building's foundations. Due to its juxtaposition to the area surrounding it, the Hook & Ladder brings attention to Glendale's overall deficiency of defining historical local landmarks that many other neighborhoods in Salt Lake City have in greater abundance.

Diversity and Community

Glendale has long remained among the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in Salt Lake City, which, along with its concentration of low-income housing, has generated unwarranted and problematic stigma and prejudice from some residing in more historically affluent neighborhoods in the city. Fixtures like the First Vietnamese Baptist Church on California Ave. highlight one of the many varied cultural communities that have long called this neighborhood home. The coexistence and intermingling of a multitude of cultures is among Glendale's most definitive and essential characteristics.
