She has tourette's syndrome so other kids often make fun of her. To distract from her tourette's she wears some odd clothes at times. When she moves in she meets her neighbor Jinsong who she becomes friends with. They get along really well but he is embarrassed to be friends with her during school because people will make fun of him. At school he tries his best to ignore her and not let people know they're friends. One day Calli asks Jinsong if he want to walk home together and embarrassed in front of his friends he lies and says he can't. After everyone else goes home, Jinsong runs to catch up with her so they can walk together. Eventually after school everyday they meet at the oak tree and walk home together. They start hanging out more and more and they both begin to form crushed on eachother. Jinsong still doesn't want people to know he likes her so he still avoids her at school but, tries to get people to be nicer and except her. After seeing another boy help Calli he gets jealous and decides he doesn't care what people think anymore and that he will tell everyone he likes her. As things are finally working out for Calli she find out her mother has married a man that lives in Vegas and that she must move yet again following a man of her mother. She is heartbroken that her mother makes another choice from a man and didn't even bother asking when she finally has found a great place. They would move around almost every year and she said it was hard making new friends every single year. There would be schools that she really liked and didn't want to leave but she just had to follow her dad's work. This relates a lot back to Calliope because she had to move where her moms boyfriends would be whether she wanted to or not. Not all children are accepting of people's differences and children do bully each other for these things. I also liked how eventually Jinsong decided that he didn't care what people thought and went with his feelings because that is what is important. I felt so bad for Calli that she kept moving because her mother was following men, I wished that the mother put more thought into what she did moving all the time. As a whole I did like this book and I think it better showcased what it's like dealing with something like tourettes. It showed that Calli fully understands how people sometimes see her and how bad she wanted to hide it. I think that the teacher could have supported Calli more and help from the bullying she got. Knowing what to support Calli and seeing what brought on ticks to help her in the classroom.
