So it is important to give students options in how they greet their class verbally or non-verbally (ie a wave). This gives me information on how the student might like to be approached. Additionally community building activities like board games or steam activities give me an opportunity to observe the way the student thinks, communicates, and expresses their unique personality. One-on one meetings are another tool, students can provide information informally through conversation or through student surveys.
