we where claning out the reptile room, I sieved the bearded dragons out , I used a small holed sieve to get every bit of dirt out and make sure as little sand would be thrown away as possible. In this photo I am sieving the sand getting all the larger dirt pieces out of the cage, I also gave them fresh water. When I cleaned them out the bearded dragon had already been taken to another class so I did not have to remove them or possibly make them stressed while cleaning then out this made the job a lot easier as I also didn’t have to worry about them escaping while the door was open.

When we where bathing the bearded dragons we noticed that they had Ornithonyssus mites so we notified Sarah that they had mites, then we got two bowls of luke warm water and a few cotton buds , we then used theses to wipe the mites from the eyes as this is where the mites where on the bearded dragon. We then collected the mites and put them under the microscope slide we collected the mites from the eyes and put them on the slide with sellotape when we where putting the tape on I was very careful so the mite was still a live so we could see them moving around and the blood was still moving around in the body of the mite, they where then treated with selamection and a full cage clean.

We put on PPE and gloves so the spray didn’t get on our skin and cought them we held them by the horns and we did the Pygmy goats first then we moved up the hill to the saanen goats and golden gurnsey, we sprayed the treatment in the opposite direction of the wind so the spray would’nt go on us and we wouldn’t breathe the treatment in and then we observed them for about 30 minuets to make sure they didn’t have an allergic reaction or have a seizure or where not overactive or drowsy.

Today we went and put PPE on , for the lead ropes and hoof picks, we then checked that the wall against the barn was clear so we could work in front of it and press the goat on the wall to restrain it we also closed the big grate at the entrance of small bridge, we then got the goats out two at a time so there were 4 people per goat one to press the goat against the wall another to hold the horns and stop it going forward and escaping another one stood behind the goat so it couldn’t go backwards and escape the other which I did was cutting and cleaning the hoof with the hoof pick and used the brush part to clean the mud away so I could see the hoof part where I needed to cut I then used the pick part to pick the mud and other things out of the hooves, I noticed that one goats where overgrown so I told Diane and she shoed me how to cut it when it’s that over grown and how to get under the nail and cut it straight and not cut it below the blood vessels. We then filled all the records out saying that all the Pygmy goats hooves had been cut.

When I was doing this someone else was restraining Rocky keeping him calm and still so I could treat him safely, we then filled his book saying that he had his flea treatment so he didn’t get a double does.

On this day we went into the grooming room put on overalls and got the area ready for bathing ducks , we wiped down the tables, equipment and baths before getting the ducks out of the cages. We did this before getting them out so they didn’t get stressed or escape , I made sure all the doors and windows were closed before we got them out as they could fly out of them. Once were sure it was safe to bring the duck out we got towels to put around the ducks head to calm it down as it was trying to escape but I had a good grip around the wings and it didn’t try and peck me, we washed them in the bath towel it down and got a tub of warm water and a tooth brush to remove The start of pebble foot. we alternate between scrubbing the feet with the tooth brush and warm water and restraining the duck this was so we both got experience doing both.

On this day we learnt how the technique of taking a dogs temperature and the facts about it. I learnt that the temperature should be between 38.3 and 39.2 degrees Celsius for a normal and healthy dog. We then got all the equipment ready to take the dogs temperature we got a thermometer, a tub of petroleum jelly we use this so that the thermometer is easier to get to the best place to take the temperature and didn’t hurt the dog, when taking the temperature one of us restrained the dog and the other took the temperature we did this by inserting the thermometer into the dogs bum and pressing it down slightly so the thermometer was able to take an accurate temperature of the dog the dogs temperature was in between the healthy section of temperatures. We also kept the dog calm by giving him treats and stroking him to keep him calm as this can be stressful for some dogs.

When we got back to the room we put the dog on the table and started brushing his coat to get any knots or of the fur before washing him. When we had got all we could out we put him in the bath and washed him with warm water and put shampoo and conditioner on and washed it off we then got a towel and dyed the dog best we could and then got the hair dryer we were not sure how he could react as the dog had never experienced being washed in College, I turned the dryer on and moved it slowly up to his back legs to get him used to the noise and feeling of it, once we knew that he wasn’t ok with it we carried on and dryer his whole body. We then cleaned his ears with Cotton pads and warm water lightly pushing it around the ear.

The order is: spread the legs and lift the head up to in large the airway then check the heart beat to make sure the animal is still alive and pull the tong out and clean the airway/mouth and pull the tong out and close the mouth with the tong still out and breath into their nose, we do 15 compressions to 2 breaths into the nose. On a large dog you have to beat the dog once under the arm.

We put PPE on then went into the weighing room and got two trays of warm water and sprinkled some salt into the tray and stirred it, we then got a hoove pick. We collected the goats with a lead rope and then put placed their hooves into the salty water and secured them. we did this so they where clean for the vet and checked for infections we found small amounts of puss and we cleaned the the trays out after every two hooves we did. We then cleaned the weighing room by mopping the floor and sweeping all the mess I could and washed the hoove picks and trays.

Today we fed the snails 🐌 we then learnt about the types of organs and reproductive systems and that they choose to be male or female and how you find their age by the shape and markings on their shells we then had a look at 3 different life stages of snails 1- egg 2- one week old snail 3 - 6 months to a year old snail. I learned that they live for about 7 years and that they can grow up too a foot long in length and that they breath threw a hole in their neck and they don’t have a nose also do not place them upside down as they can suffocate the snail because of where the lung is. They also to reproduce they throw some sperm at another snail and then the other snail has to reproduce with the snail that threw it.

To meet all the 5 animal needs from the Health and Safety at Work Act 2006, I diluted the shampoo by mixing it in a bottle with warm water, I then placed my hand over the dogs eyes to protect his eyes and causing him discomfort I also kept checking on the temperature of the water by keeping my hand near the dog to check the water was still suitable for the dog, before I got the dog I moped the room because there is a leak and there was a puddle of water in the floor and placed a wet floor sigh and told everyone to look out for it.
