Kuffle Bunny Free is a book about Trixie, her daddy and mommy, and her favorite stuffed animal, Knuffle Bunny. Trixie is traveling to see her grandparents and forgets her knuffle bunny of the plane. Knuffle Bunny Free is a great book to teach fluency in kindergarten because of the repetition of the words. The children can practice phonics because the word compositions are a mixture between simple and complex, reaching all literacy development levels.

Knuffle Bunny Too, a sequel, is a book about Trixie and her classmate who both have Knuffle Bunny stuffed animals. Trixie and her classmate’s Knuffle Bunnies get mixed up at school and both girls realize this after they have already gotten home. Trixie and her classmate meet up in the middle of the night to switch back the knuffle bunnies. I would use this book in a kindergarten classroom to assess comprehension by doing a reader’s theater. It would be intriguing for the children to play to roles of both Trixie, her classmates, and the two different knuffle bunnies.

Peanut Butter and Cupcake is a book about a piece of bread with peanut butter who wants to find a new friend to play soccer with. After asking multiple others, like hot dog and cupcake, peanut butter finally finds a willing friend in another piece of bread with jelly. In the end, all of the food items are playing soccer together. Peanut Butter and Cupcake can be used in a kindergarten classroom to teach puns, as well as fluency because of the repetition of the phrase said over and over by peanut butter.

The day the crayons came home is a sequel to the story The day the crayons quit. In this tale, a child named Duncan finds a stack of letters written to him from his crayons. The crayons are writing to Duncan to complain about all of the places he has left them throughout his life, such as in between the couch cushions and by the pool on vacation. At the end of the story, Duncan creates a special box for all of the lost crayons to comply to their wishes of having a space. The Day the Crayons Came Home could be used in a first grade classroom to include a letter writing lesson as well as incorporate descriptive vocabulary words because of the phrases used by the crayons.

The One and Only Ivan could also be used to incorporate new vocabulary as well as comprehension because the literature circles apply to both of these ideas.

One Crazy Summer tells the tale of three sisters, Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern, and their travels to Oakland, California to visit their mother, Cecile, who abandoned them at birth. The three sister attend a summer school program where they learn about Black Panthers, African American historical activists and rallies, and basic civil rights, all the while meeting new people and unintentionally growing closer to their previously estranged mother. One Crazy Summer would be a wonderful way to incorporate the connection between reading and writing in a third grade classroom. For example, the students could model the style and syntax of the book and write about their own summer experience towards the beginning of the year.

This book tells the tale of Comfort Snowberger and her life while dealing with the death of her great aunt Florentine and her inhabitance of living in the town funeral home. The book follows Comfort through her days as she drifts apart from her best friend Declaration, gets accustomed to family members such as her worrisome cousin Peach, and manages her way through a life-threatening flood that results in the loss of her dog Dismay. Although Each Little Bird That Sings circulates around the depressing topic of death, Comfort Snowberger adds spunk and animation to every situation life throws at her.
