Classification of Audiences

The Standard Occupation Classification is a government system to classify occupations of people. This is a film therefore all the people making this are occupied as associated professional and technical occupations and Media associate professionals because this includes TV and Film. The game is under Associated with professional and technical occupations and Design associate professionals because of the designers of the game.

Classification means classifying something. This is for example this is a film therefore they classify very film to protect children from unsuitable content in films. This gives a chance to give consumers information that they might need about the film before deciding whether to watch it or not. This is the same for a game as it may contain harmful content which isn't suitable for children therefore it needs to classified. This film is rated R because of the crude, sexual content, drug material, teen drinking and violence. Therefore it wouldn't be suitable for children to watch this film because of the rating. The game is also rated 18 because of the content of the game which includes some Nudity, Violence and Gore, Swearing, Alcohol/Drugs and Smoking.

Psychographic is a study of values, opinions, attitudes, interests, personality and lifestyle. This area is a type of research that includes of these. In the film for example they would use this to make the film suitable for the audience to see if its there lifestyle so they can relate and enjoy the film. For instance for 21 Jump Street they have based the film on two cops that have to go under cover for a private investigation which in everyday people would do and people enjoy watching the drama of the film included. For the game the makers would also have to make it match with other peoples lifestyle. Even though this game is very violent and includes people shooting and stealing cars it is designed available to let a character do whatever they like which people would enjoy.

Geo-demographics classify people by their surroundings and their neighbourhood according to the characteristics of the areas. They link people to where they live and although not all of the research techniques will be used to define their audience they are still there every time they are needed. For the film they would already know the target audience but they could also do there own research and learn more about the audience in more detail and ask questions that could relate to the film and see whether the film is like where they live for instance. This is the same for the game because they could do there own Quantitative research for the game to ask there audience if it relates to them and there living to this day and thats perhaps why they enjoy playing it.

Demographic is information used in marketing to classify the audiences age, gender, race and other categories. The demographics are broken up into bands depending on peoples status or jobs so for this film it could be aimed at anybody so it could be more suitable for low status people for instance unemployed which are going through crime. On the other hand it could also be be high class people for instance police officers who also go through the same thing as the films day to day. The game would be the same because it contains violence and action so it would have a wide audience interested.

Identify Audiences- With identify audience, the film and game very similar to each other as in the process of how its done. The Occupation Classification shows that they are both related because they are both media based with film and games being similar.

With Classification they are also near enough the same because they both contain the same content which is violence, bad language and drugs so there target audience are very similar.

The Psychographic they are both the same thing because of the process and how they both have to find the audiences lifestyle which the 21 Jump Street and Grand Theft Auto are both similar in lifestyle wise. Geo-demographic is also similar to each other with the game and film because of the process of asking questions to the audience and receiving information. Lastly Demographic are basically the same because both the game and film would suit the same statuses of people towards the game.

Audience Research- Focus groups would be similar but the game makers would be talking about how to change the game and what improvements they can make if it has any errors. Where as the film workers would talk about what they could put in the film and perhaps the Director would tell the Camera man where he wants him to go and what shots he would like for the film they are going to film.

For the Questionnaires they could be set out very differently for example the film makers could make one online instead of handing one out. The game makers of Grand Theft Auto could of made a website and put the questionnaire on the website for gamers to answer the questions and then they maybe would of produced the game or perhaps gave them a questionnaire when they are doing the testing for the game.

Audience measurement panels is different for both because for the film they would see how many people would want to watch the film or perhaps get people to buy the film and then record how people brought it. With the gaming they would do this when doing the testing stage and see how long people are playing the game for. These would be different results for each but they would both see how popular they product would be.

A face-to-face interview would be completely the same because both of the important people if its the Director for the film or perhaps the Maker of the game would interview different people and see what outcome they get with having that interview.

Focus groups are a group of people that go to a meeting or discussion about a certain product before it being launched. This is a chance for the workers to give there opinions on the product and change options around. For this film they would of had a focus group meeting to discuss all the points about the film and then they produced it. They do the same process for games because it gives everyone a chance to have their opinion on the game and see if they can change anything about it.

Questionnaires are a set of written questions with a choice of answers. This is very popular with research because it can get a good view of what the audience like and what films they are interested in. For this film they would of made a questionnaire for their type of target audience and have questions for example What genre film do you like to watch? Also perhaps what their thoughts would be on the 21 Jump Street film and they could information back from this. They would go through the same process with the game because they would want to know if people would actually play the game therefore they would write questions for example What type of games do you play? and there opinion on how Grand theft Auto sounds as a game.

Audience Measurement Panels is another type of research which analyse's for instance if someone wanted to do a survey on how long people watch television for, they buy a box which shows there actions and how long they watch it for and then calculate that information to see if there product would actually be populate with their audience. For the film they would have people watching the film or see how many go to watch the film and see how popular it would be. For the game they would have people going for Beta testing and seeing how long people would play the game for and if it was successful and people would be getting into the game then thats when they would produce it.

A face-to-face interviews is a two-people meeting about a topic. For the film this would include perhaps just the director and then people one by one would come into a room and perhaps get asked multiple questions about the film. For the game it would be the same but it would be the perhaps the creator asking questions if they have ever played the game or what kind of genre they like which is like doing the questionnaires but in person.

Selection is the first part of the product because the film makers have to make sure that its selected correctly for instance for the lighting and the actors to all be organised and correct. For the game they would have to make sure all of the buttons for instance are going to work and that it is going to be eye catching for there target audience.

With the composition of the film they would have to make sure that they completely know what the storyline is and what they have made up is going to be good for the audience to make it into a good whole film. For the game they would have to make sure the levels each make sense and that they not all jumbled up so it makes sense for the audience.

Lastly combining everything for instance with making the film they would at the end have to combine all the film for example editing the film to make it all make sense and also interesting for the audience. With the game they would have to combine all of the characters and the levels to make a full game so when its produced for example its a whole story game.

The content would be very important for the film because the film makers would want there audience to understand what the is going to be like and hope they would like how the theme of it is. For the game the content would be shown for the audience to get an idea of what its going to be like playing the game and this also lets parents know what they can let there children play on what the content is like on the game.

The language would also be shown with the Classification for example for the film it would give the information of what the language would be for example if it was a Spanish film they would have to write that there is Spanish language included so people would know. For the game it would be the same process because the audience would want to know what the games language is going to sound like.

The genre is very important because its what makes people attracted to it in the first place. For this film it would be seen as a Comedy and Action, therefore people would research that type of genre and find this film which makes it popular for there audience. For the game it would be seen as a violent game therefore people would again research and because its a popular genre it would be easy for them to sell the game because thats what their audience like.

The narrative would be very important because for example making an adult themed film wouldn't be very good with a child likes voice narrating the film. Therefore the film makers would have to think hardly about how they will make there storyline best to fit there theme. This would be the same for the game because they wouldn't want there storyline to be messed up for example finishing the first level of the game and then it coming to the end straight away they would need to make more levels to fit with the storyline of the game.

They would definitely need to think about the visual imagery because for the film they wouldn't want to make it but there not be many camera scenes for the film because there would be nothing to watch. For the game they would need to think how they could make there visual imagery very eye-catching for the gamers because they want something to stand out for them which keeps there target audience playing and them not getting bored of the same things so they would need to add more.

Lastly the graphic style would be important because for the film needs the graphics to make it look important and good. The game makers would have to think widely in depth on the graphics because thats what makes the game playable and the audience want the graphics to be good so they can enjoy it.

The genre for the 21 Jump Street Film is Action, Comedy and Crime. The genre for the Grand Theft Auto 3 Game is also Action, Comedy and Crime.

Music Programming is also highly important because for the film without sound no one would watch the movie, so they would need to include many action sounds, actors talking and sound effects for all the actions in the film. This is also very important for the game because again no one would want to play Grand Theft Auto in silence so they need to think about what sounds to include when there gamers are playing the game.

The film could be advertised in the local newspaper or even a lifestyle magazine because thats how they would let there target audience know about the film and then it would make them interested to go and see the film. This would also be the same for the game because they need to advertise it so for example you could see Grand Theft Auto being advertised in a gaming magazine which then gets gamers interested.

Codes of practice would be very important for the workers of the film and game industry. This is a set of written rules which explains how people should behave when working.

Web Accessibility Guidelines are a series of guidelines for improving web accessibility. This would be helpful for the film and game advertising because for example elderly people wouldn't know how to look up the film but this could help them more to see what the film is like and thats an advantage for the film and game makers.

The Press code of conduct is where it gives the industry a firm set of principles to help guide it. This can also be address complaints from members of public so for example the film makers would have to take on reports of there audience if they do not agree with parts of the film. Also with the game if a member of public do not agree with parts of the game.

Race Discrimination Law is very important because the companies could get in serious trouble if they don't do this. For film this means they cannot be racist for example choosing a white actor because they don't want a black actor in there film or for instance there not aloud to use racism in there films vividly. For the game it is also important because people could complain about the racism going on so in Grand Theft Auto they have included different race so its equal.

The Freedom of Information is a right given to access recorded information held by the public organisations. This is good for the film and gaming industry because there are no restrictions with age, nationality or where there live they can accept the information given by public.

Copyright is very important firstly for filming because they have the right for that film so when the film starts they also add that it nothing from there film can be used by somebody else because its there material and they own it. It is also the same with gaming because they wouldn't want someone to copy there game so copyright is very important and letting people know that they made that game up and no one can

The age is going to be very important because they will need to decide what kind of people they will make there product for. This is for example for the film because it has high content of violence they would know that the age would be high because it wouldn't be suitable for children and this is the same for the game.

The gender is also very important because for example this action film is usually stereotyped for men but also its a comedy so women would enjoy it as well. This is same for the game because boys are usually playing games so the game would be made for them.

The ethnic background would be very important to think about because they wouldn't want anyone being angry at there film or game. For the film they could be different cultures added or they would change the language so its suitable for people who don't know English. This is same for the game because they might not understand the actions so they would have to make it suitable to different backgrounds.

They wouldn't want to offend anybody so they would have to think about their audiences sexual orientation. This is for instance to make sure that they don't offend anyone who is homosexual for example. But also for the game they would perhaps want to include that so people who are playing the game might feel equal and it be better for others.

Visual language would be important to include because for example in the film they where on drugs but acting strange. They didn't talk but this is visual language because its showing you that they have been doing drugs and thats what happens so thats what its coming across as to the audience which is the same for the game.

Aural Language is how people hear the language so for example in a film the audience would know the language and what they are hearing without it even being mentioned. Also with the game there could be different language which we would hear.

They would both have to think deeply about the characters because thats what draw people in. The film is very important to include the character because thats what makes the story and thats mainly what people are watching the movie for so theres a purpose. This is the same with a game because they need a character to play the game and theres always a ,win character when playing Grand Theft Auto.

The sort of style is also very important because they want to fit it with the theme of the product. For the film and the game they would want the style to be eye catching for their target audience so for example if its action they would want to include Guns and big men.

Camera work is vital. This would be mainly for the film because theres actual scenes shot from cameras with this. For the game it would be where the character could move so there would still be scenes but not camera shots being it is animated.

Soundtracks are very popular with movies and games because they include all different kinds of songs that there aloud to use. They play different songs in different scenes which people enjoy and the movie company sometimes use a soundtrack for the movie. Games are the same but they don't usually use full songs it would just be little snippets of tracks which can be available on websites for example You Tube.

Elements of Construction- For this comparison the game and film are some sort of familiar because they both have to be organised and make sure both of there products are all working before producing.

With the composition of both of these products they are also nearly identical because a film has a storyline but also some games come with a storyline. The movie 21 Jump Street does have a storyline because its a movie but Grand Theft Auto is limited because there isn't a story to go by as the character controls everything they do in the game.

Combination is vital for film and game because they both have to focus on combining all of the storyboard for the film but also for the game they would have to combine are the levels for the gamer to play and enjoy it.

Modes of Address- The content of each the game and film is both the same because they each want there content to be equal and be interesting for their target audience.

The language for the film would be important because they need to make it suitable for their audience and this is the same for the game because they need to focus on making the language suitable.

The genre for the film is important because it what attracts the audience to watch the film so for example they have made this film a Comedy/Action so this is very popular with the public. The gaming company also have to focus on what genre they want there to be.

The narrative is also very equal for the film and game. This is because the film is focusing on making there for instance adult theme suitable narrative for the adults because it couldn't be a child voice that wouldn't be right. This is the same for the game because if they had a theme for instance Modern Age game they wouldn't want a adult voice with no character narrating.

The visual imagery is both important but for film they have camera shots which they would have to focus on but for the game its all about the visual imagery.

Graphic style is more important for the game because the game needs to include all different kinds of graphics to make the game different from all the others. For the film they would have to focus more on some graphics but not all because it is mainly camera shot.

According to Genre- Music Programming is vital because with no sound for the film or game it wouldn't work so the makers of the film would have to think about the sound for example sound effects and actions. Also for the game they would have to include sound so the game makers are not playing in silence.

Both the film and game need to be advertised so they would be advertised in the same way. This would be for example newspapers or gaming magazines.

Constraints- Codes of practice are a set of written rules which explain how people should be behave so this would be the same because the working environments are the same and people need to behave in both film and gaming industry.

Web Accessibility Guidelines are series of guidelines for improving web accessibility. This would be very important for both because older people need to access the web to perhaps access the game and also they need to see when the film is out.

The Press Code of Conduct are important for both because both the filming and gaming company have to obey certain rules.

Race Discrimination are both important because for the film they would have to include all different races but also for the game Grand theft Auto it does contain all different races as it is a violent game therefore it doesn't offend anybody.

The Freedom of Information helps for both the game and film because some parents for the 21 Jump Street would not agree on the drug use in the film. For the game someone could be afforded of how graphic the game is therefore people have a chance to say there opinion about it.

Copyright is equal for both industry because for the film they need to make sure they include that everything they have filmed is of all there content so nobody steals there film. For the game they would also need to make sure they haven't copied anybody and there they show that everything they have made with the game is there so nobody steals their idea and makes the same game.

Reasons for Preference- The age is slightly the same because the film includes the same content as the Grand Theft Auto game. The companys have to consider what age is suitable for the game and also the film.

The gender is different because the 21 Jump Street it is suitable for a female or male. For the game it is slightly different because males are usually stereotyped to play games and Grand Theft Auto has very graphic content which females not like but it could also be suitable for them.

The ethnic background is the same for the Race Discrimination Law because they both focus on different types of culture that might need to be added in the film and game.

Sexual Orientation is vital for both film and game because they both need to not offend anybody so both of the industries are careful and focus on these types of rules.

Language Codes- Visual Language might be important because for the film it needs to make sense for certain people and so the audience understands whats included in the game and the film.

Aural Language is how people hear the language on the film and game for instance. This is important because every time of language needs to be heard correctly and suitable for different types of peoples cultures.

Generic Codes- The characters are going to be completely different because in the film there two males and the storyline is completely different to the game which are any character you can choose and they choose different paves.

The sort of Style is also going to be different because in the film it contains different locations and scenes towards the game which is differently themed then the film but includes similar props and actions.

Camera work is also very different because it is more based on films as they tend to use cameras more with filming the scenes but for the games they could work on taking pictures on gaming characters.

Lastly the soundtracks are often included because for the film some of them would always include a certain soundtrack to represent the film. For the game they would include different tracks throughout for example in Grand Theft Auto when driving a car you can use a radio which has different music on which gamers enjoy because they can also find that song if they like it.
