What is the problem and what is causing it?

One of the biggest issues in today’s world is poverty caused by lack of education. Children and adults in all places of the world suffer because they do not have access to education. Students that do attend school barley can do anything because of the classroom conditions and environment. Most schools in South Africa are overcrowded. There aren’t enough textbooks for every child, and there are not enough desks to go with it. Teachers are scarce because they do not have an education either. Unfortunately, this is just the first layer of the cake. About 40 million girls do not have access to education in South Africa whatsoever. They are forced to abandon school because of child marriage, harassment or housework. The lucky girls aren’t even allowed past primary school. With an education like this, young children don’t learn the necessary skills they need to have a job. This leads to unemployment, no money, and a poor economy. Poverty is a problem across the globe, but especially in Africa. No education means a poor, weak country. Students that are educated will lead to a strong, balanced and healthy community. If we don't make a change in education now, children will be left poor and unhealthy, adding to the poverty levels in a country with lots of opportunities.

The lack of education in Africa has changed the way of communities across the country. Learning about health, safety, math, and language, and many for skills are needed in a working community. Unfortunately, students that don’t get these skills generate poverty for themselves and others. Some effects of no education are unemployment (because adults lack numerical skills and communication skills), no healthcare, and a greater chance of diseases like HIV and AIDS. Girls will also end up getting pregnant early. This is because they never learned right from wrong, and what is safe and healthy for themselves. Teens also get no income from jobs. This leads to no shelter and little food. If students do receive and education in Africa, food security will increase and malnutrition will decrease. Health will improve, equality such as gender equality will become less of a problem and disease will decrease. With all these possibilities, a community full of healthy, strong people will lead to a stronger economy and a better country for all.

Why should the world be concerned about this issue?

The poverty in Africa had a major effect on the rest of the world-and it still is. Education overall has a lot of benefits, but what happens to those benefits when there is no education at all?
Across the world, schools with educated teachers provide a safe learning environment for students. Education is a right for most people in countries around the globe. Most schools in America provide safe drinking water, teachers working everyday, large classrooms, and much more. Education is required for almost everything. Survival to work, and for everyday life. Sadly children without an education will never be able to work and get paid, and protect their health. The world should be concerned that many people will suffer because of unemployment. The world itself will begin to suffer due to poverty if we don't make a effort to change the right of education.

People around the world have joined together to help fix this problem. These people form organizations, like CAMFED (a international non-governmental, non-profit organization founded in 1993. Their mission is to get rid of poverty in Africa through the education of girls), and The Malala Fund (a fund that is focused on getting girls to speak out for education. The organization mainly focuses on delivering education to communities around the world. Making moves in order to make girls education a true priority across the globe).

September 25th, 2019

I sit on a wooden stool in my small kitchen, next to my mother, Adisa. My mother taught me how wash dishes, wash clothes and cook food: the common tasks girls and women do at home for their families. My mother washes the dishes faster than I can even run, probably because she has spent her whole life at home doing chores. You see, girls my age aren't allowed to attend secondary school, and the lucky few only spend their years at primary. My family couldn't afford to go to school, because we live far away from local education. My father works on cars, my mother stays home because she doesn't have the skills to get a job. My little sister, Nya, sleeps most of the day too.
I don't like washing dishes and doing chores. Every. Single. Day. I wish I could someday learn to read, or even count to 100. I watch the boys in my town bike home with their bags full of books and paper. I watch them play games outside my house and sing songs the must have learned at school. I sit, alone, trapped in a home with no freedom, no ability to speak out because of my illiteracy, my nonexistent social skills, my ability to be human. I dream of the day where I could someday go to school, maybe someday bike home with my bag full of books and papers like the boys in my town. Someday.

~ Imani (13)
