The claim is that Willy got mad at Linda for trying to fix the stockings, but he gave the stockings to his mistress. He got mad at Linda for trying to fix the stockings because Willy was trying to prove a point that they are not poor so Linda does not need to sow back the hole. Also that he can go back out and buy some new ones. ¨And thanks for the stockings. I love a lot of stocking¨ (Miller 39). He gave his mistress a new pair of stockings to prove they are not poor.

The Lomans experienced a lot of disappointment and each let down made them more and more disheartened. Although they continue to stay hopeful for a better situation, the disappointment deeply affects Willy. He constantly reverts back to a time when his children made him feel proud and when he made his family proud because his current life is riddled with disappointment. The disappointment eventually gets to Willy when he can no longer handle another let down and ends his life after being fired and realizing Biff has little hope for a successful future.

Regret was something Willy experienced throughout the novel. He would have moments where he would talk to himself and having past illusions. This may have caused his character to seem bipolar. He mainly has remorse for knowing that Biff actually cares about him.

''... simonizing, simonizing that little red car! Why, why can't I give him something and not have him hate?

This quote is from when Willy gets home after Biff and Happy left him at the restaurant. At this point in the story, Willy just wants Biff to love him as a father and mentor.

The stockings throughout the grand scheme of the play is evident from Willy's Perspective.

Even earlier on within the story, Willy lashed out toward his wife about mending stockings, as he was more so upset towards himself over her. "Just mending my stockings. There's so expensive-" "I won't have you mending stockings in this house! Now throw them out!" (119) He didn't provide something better for her, but was more than willing to gift them to a woman he slept with. This not only stirred guilt, but also drew out a rather unhealthy lifestyle- Though the reader is unaware of what all happened in order.

He had been hallucinating, cheating, not making a living, losing one of his sons, and found himself to be suicidal. He states "She's nothing to me, Biff. I was lonely, I was terribly lonely." (120) to Biff, even to his own horror since he'd walked in on their affair. The true tie-together being his son who'd seen both sides of his romantic life, infidelity and loyalty. This is what really pushed his son and himself over the edge, and their relationship has been broken since, thus bringing on more of the brokenness of Willy's frame of mind.
