After seeing this video, I can only think of three words: inspiring, challenging and innovative. It shares a design applied to maths but that teachers of all other subjects can adapt. Using a personalized learning method, in a first approach, teachers determine students learning needs, interests, and aspirations, looking to each student as an individual; the second step would be to provide learning experiences that are customized—to a greater or lesser extent—for each student. But my question is: is this possible when we have classes with a large number of students and only one teacher? How can we assess students efficiently and effectively and how can we know if they are too many?

I also enjoyed the 8 skills set to define a skillful teacher. I realize Irish math’s teachers had to work a lot, but I believe they find that effort worthy.

I was very pleased to read the following statement in the pre-self-assessment activity of module 2: ‘Group discussions and the development of language literacy are relevant to the teaching and learning of mathematics’. One of our priorities at school this term is aligning assessment in all subjects with the competence-based vision of the official curricula. For instance we are trying to convince our Maths teachers of the importance of coaching/teaching and assessing (Maths-related) language skills since ‘managing mathematical language’ is an official standard in the Maths curriculum. We propose using formative assessment for all branches of mathematics for our 12-14-year-old students. In the video talk about the Irish experience of assessing Maths, I especially liked the assignments (from/to) about the area and perimeter. This example really demonstrates how a mathematical problem can be described/transformed in a real life context and how the development of language skills is stimulated at the same time. Our Maths colleagues are convinced that they can’t do without written summative tests. Eventually for geometry, they say they might consider doing without a summative test and only stick to formative assessment. And what about you, Maths colleagues, what do you think about this issue?

conceptual understanding in mathematics.

What I like most of the Irish Experience of Assessing Mathematics is the role of formative assessment in the classroom, focused on analysing student’s responses and written work. Teachers need to look for evidence of what the student understood, rather than focus on right answers, so they can judge what students misunderstood and provide supportive feedback to help them develop mathematical proficiency.
I hope this pattern will be extended to other subjects in all Europe.

Of course, the things followed a logical track: they offered the teachers the support they needed to prepare for the new approach (and they still do, free of charge), they introduced it in the syllabus, they adopted the new system of evaluation and now, that it proved its effectiveness, they are looking for ways to expand it to the higher levels.

This video about the Irish Initiative Projects Maths was very impressive. As matter of fact this Irish case study would take lots of changes in the development of teachers' competences and in assessment.

Previously students were asked yes or no questions, now they have to use their critical and reasoning thinking to solve a mathematical problem. So the Continuous Professional Development ( CPD) focuses on what students misunderstood providing them supporting feedback that will help them to develop mathematical proficiency rather than that is focusing on right answers. There will be a great change in syllabus, tasks and key skills in classroom supported by PBL approach that is students centered. Students need to be involved in group work, discovery learning, questioning and discussing. I think that teaching to develop mathematical competences through this new approach is a great challenge for all teachers and requires a hard work and a constant updating. I agree with a great investment in improving teachers' competences. But in my opinion, this could be very difficult to implement in all countries and the abandon of traditional approach could require lots of time, too. I hope it could be implemented in a narrow future when either the syllabus or teaching strategies will be aligned.

It proves that, when we want to bring about change, we must work collaboratively - ministries, teachers, headteachers, students and all the entities linked to the system, one way or the other. It's so nice to see! I'd like to see that closer to home! I think that the most difficult challenge to overcome must be to go from a teacher-based model to a student-based one, not only because of the teachers, but also because students are formatted to being passive and spoon-fed. We must change that!

This new approach to assessing maths is a real challenge for both teachers and students, but in the end both partners will benefit: students will learn and develop more quickly and will get a detailed feedback about the levels where they are at currently, and also about the fields to be developed in the future. Though this whole procedure needs quite a lot of input from the teachers' side without the feeling of "dominancy", it seems to be worth taking as a good example for a future change in a lot of other countries, including mine.

All the features of a competent math teacher that are mentioned in the video should define a teacher, independently from the subject. We have to learn that students are minds in progress and try new ways to scaffold them. Final assessment surely would be less tragic if students could show not only what they can repeat, but what they can do. The problem is, italian exames are not aligned with the syllabus, when a group of teachers change its way of working.

And it's the same problem with other subjects.
This video is really interesting but if techers and schools work to improve this methodology, with changes, support, lot of time to prepare the projects, etc. Why external assessment are the same than lot of years ago?

The Irish case is really inspirational, as many have pointed out. It is clear that changes in educational objectives must be supported at national level and have illuminated reformers at the decision taking level. Plus, alignment of final assessments with school sylllabi and pedagogical classroom practices is fundamental. Starting from the final assessments has been the solution adopted in the Irish case, but supported by training to teachers on a very large scale. This seems to be the weak point in our country, Italy, even though in single institutions things may be very different. Personally, I have had a very hard time to get the students'work done at our school (and I am not referring to my discipline, but the way students work for many subjects done in a less traditional, not notion based approach) appreciated by external examiners on several occasions. On one particular occasion all the students of a great class(where motivation, personal engagement, responsibility had been the key characteristics for many of the students) got so frustrated during their final exam due to traditional approach of the external head of the commission, that on several subsequent meetings with younger students of the school they described the exam as the most demotivating part of their education.

Some key points of the video, in my opinion, are: the expression “impact” of a “new style of question”; “A change in the role of the teacher and the student”; “from a teacher-centred model” to a “student-centred” one. It is of course a model yet adopted in Italian educational system, but I am observing from this renovated point of view: a student-centred model for questioning. I am thinking about a “question-centred model” of teaching and learning, in which the main objective is encourage students to make the correct question, rather than answering and the correct question in a specific context. A really interactive lesson is the best way to apply a competence-based approach. By developing the competence of questioning, students implement their reasoning processes and understand more interconnections, communicate their personality and identity among the other pupils in the classroom.
