In Surgical High Care, patients will stay up to 48 hours for continous monitoring and optimisation prior to returning to their admission surgical ward. We foster collaborative working with the wider multi-disciplinary team to promote enhanced recovery after surgery.

The patient is collected from the ward by theatre staff and has their surgical procedure.


Once the patient is recovered from theatre, they are admitted onto our unit to monitor for post operative complications. Only patients with complex medical history are admitted to our unit, which is decided by their surgeon and anaesthetist.


The patient will be reviewed by our anaesthetic team, based on the unit and the patients surgical team prior to their discharge to their original ward.


The elective surgical specialities in this hospital are; Colorectal, General, Gynaecology, Breast and Trauma & Orthopaedics.

  • Hourly observations for the first 6 hours post operative and then following 2 hourly observations until discharge.

  • Hourly observations for patients needing non invasive positive pressure therapy (High Flow) and meteraminol (Inotrope) infusion.

  • Pain management via Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) and Patient Controlled Epidural Analgesia (PCEA) and rectus sheath catheters.

  • Strict fluid maintenance (Input/output)
