The school doesn't help at all with preparing us for collage as before getting outside help I had no idea what I had to do when trying to figure out where to go and even how to apply. Adding courses meant to help you prepare for collage/uni would be great.

School Funding Issue

There are some issues with this school, but one that stands out to me is the unbalanced income support between the major departments here at SDCPA. I feel like departments such as theater and dance are more financially supported than the art departments. For example, art supplies are limited because the art departments do not have enough money to provide them.

I've noticed that bikers using the bike lanes near the school don't feel as safe as they should. This is cause the traffic on the road is 50 mph, but drivers usually go 10-15 mph over the speed limit, and there is no barrier between the bike lane and the traffic.

Stop bathroom vandalism, it gives the janitors a harder time. Janitors shouldn't have to clean up a purposeful mess created by students just because they thought it was funny or cool especially for Janitors who don't get paid enough. It's a unnecessary act, and it affects other students due to non-clean environment.

Staff controlling traffic

I believe the staff who go outside after school to control the traffic actually make it worse. It takes longer to exit the parking lot, and it becomes a mess.

Unfair Funding and Recognition Between Majors

Most people are aware of the insane amount of both funding and trips those in performance majors at SDSCPA get, however, those in other groups often feel left out. I know peers who are fine art majors are tired of the same museum trip we get, joking about such. You also don't hear much in regards to anything that isn't performances, and teachers have also expressed concern with buying supplies such as in art classrooms. Fair funding that wasn't so heavily focused on the performance aspect, but also the other arts would be beneficial, especially to boost those students' participation.

Pollution

~ People intend to forget the land we stand on is not necessarily are, it was created when we were first born in real times. Pollution has been created by people who don’t care for Mother Nature, it’s why we have so many crisis in weather, upcoming disasters, climate changes, floods, new discovered diseases.

~ Other ways people have destroyed is deforestation, leaving trash in the streets, ground, the ocean, resulting in animals getting killed from the trash caught in their throats or around their bodies, nature dying from how many trees we have cut down being used for houses and other constructions. Killing off animals to be listed as endangered or extinct.

Broken/Warped Locks in Bathrooms

I've noticed that some locks and doors in the bathrooms are not very reliable, and I've also heard from others similar issues in their own respective places. It brings up questions of privacy and security.

Mental Health Through Cell Phones

I understand that there is a state district mandate that phones are a distraction in school environments, and I am fine with that explanation. However, many people do not view it that way. Instead, they are framing it as a mental health issue, which I have a problem with. I have made my thoughts on this clear before, but I believe that using mental health to criticize phones is a gross misrepresentation of young people's struggles with mental health. Phones are not the root cause of the problem; in fact, many people use phones as a coping mechanism to help them deal with those struggles. So to have the school district say that they are restricting phones to help mental health instead of helping to fund actual relief and support programs in and out of schools is quite sad.

Trash and Litter

I see trash littered all around campus. even though there are janitors that help clean, and a multitude of trash cans, there is still so much trash. Perhaps gather a group of students with provided equipment (i.e. gloves, reusable buckets, trash grabbers, etc) and let them pick up trash around campus --> make it a competition with a prize for who picks up the most trash?

Walking can be dangerous for everyone. In particular, I would like to highlight students walking home from school. My brother was robbed at gunpoint by two guys near my neighborhood while he was walking home. He had to give up his wallet, phone, and watch, or else he might have lost his life that day. There could be many solutions to this, such as students having more reliable transportation, like carpool services, if buses don't go to their area. At-home solutions could involve students riding bikes or scooters. Political solutions could tackle gun violence.

With the appearance of safety people by entrances and exists to parking lots, the road feels incredibly congested (And I don't think its because of the students who can drive). A 10 min drive takes 20 min sometimes

I want to address government funding. Many people who rely on government funding will lose their primary source of income. Government officials should also feel the repercussions of their own actions and be affected, not just the public. The only way to get things back on track is by pushing those in power to make decisions and holding them accountable for their actions.

Almost anyone can agree that alot of students deal with things like depression, anxiety, stress, etc. schools dont help with this either by pushing students to their limits sometimes beyond what they understand. some students even have stuff like IEP's which also being one of those students i understand the struggle of being a slow student and understanding slower then other students.

There are many immigrants here in California especially here is San Diego and LA and those immigrants have children who are U.S. citizens yet those parents and children are being treated like criminals. I believe that there should be more help and laws that should prevent ICE agency from breaking and entering, arresting , and separating families there is so many CITIZENS who are being taken away just because of how they look. And the government picks and chooses who they believe is a criminal just look at our president a convicted felon. Yet he is being treated like a king while immigrant families are being treated unfairly!!

There aren't as many recycling cans around school, and the couple that do exist are few and far between. They aren't easily accessible and students do not really recycle. I feel that this school should implement more recylcing cans, and ensure they are used properly.

All over the school, there's trash and food left on the floor, outside, or even in classrooms. I think there should be more strictness on leaving trash. It's not a good feeling when you go up to your desk and see trash/food that someone left behind.

One issue I see commonly among students is poor mental health. A lot of teens deal with stress, anxiety, or burnout from school, social pressure, and/or personal stuff, but most of us don’t feel comfortable asking for help. I think there should be more open conversations and spaces to decompress emotional state. Taking care of our mental health should be treated the same way we take care of our grades.

Our Bathrooms at School

I feel like there is an 8/10 chance of not having toilet paper or soap in the bathrooms at school. This has never been an issue I found very disturbing in my past 3 years here, but for some reason, it has been very bad recently. We shouldnt have to go to th bathroom hoping there will be toilet paper, it should be a given it is in there. Adding on, I find that many of the sinks do not even work. Why are our bathrooms lacking materials?

The water fountains are used by everybody but that get really dirty and its gross. I think that we could clean the water fountains at the end of the day to ensure that there is no dirt but also bacteria.

Lack of good public transportation

There is a lack of public transportation in many areas in the city. It takes much longer to get places by bus and the bus routes are often unhelpful in getting from one area to another. A lot more people would take the public bus to school if they could but its not feasible if there aren't bus routes near them. Most places are built to be car-centric meaning its difficult for pedestrians, bikers, and anyone trying to get around without using a car.

Limited Creative Options for Presenting Mastery

The common assigned methods of presentation (essays, slideshows, posters) whilst encompassing a good margin of methods, isn't always the most effective method that the student could use to display their mastery. The proposition I'm suggesting is to more often have open ended assignments that allow students to choose any method of presentation artistic or not. Imagine a student choosing to present a short jingle, or a fiction story, maybe even an animation! It allows them to chose whatever style of presentation they most comfortable with and as such make the information present shine stronger with their personal investment.

What I've seen and others have seen on campus, it is very hard to get pure quality water. Mainly, people have complained it tastes like toliet water and the metal refil has mold and dirt, so it clearly isn't taken care of and isn't a priority. Not having pure water is a huge issue because it can make you sick with all the germs that are surrounding tap water.

Lack of Blood Donors

In our healthcare system there has term lack of blood donors. However, we as a school can help solve this problem through hosting a blood drive. This would help our student body because it is part of community service and a lot of people would be willing to help with the connivence of it being at their school. Plus most blood drives come with fun snacks and merch!!

Whether that is our community on campus or out, we should give back. Whether that's through volunteering opportunities or collaborative activities. For example, at an old school of mine, I organized a food basket giveaway during the holiday seasons for underprivileged families. We don't know everyone's situation but everyone should feel supprted by the community that surrounds them. An idea is going to assisted living homes and help as sitters or give out care packages to homeless people in our communities.

More Political Awarness

I have noticed that many students at our school and other teens in our community may be unaware of big political issues and events that are occuring both nationally and on a global scale. Although some seniors may be eligible to vote in the upcoming midterm elections, and certainly in the 2028 presidential election, students often have very vague ideas of what they believe politically. Because of a lack of information in class about current politics, youth approaching voting age don't have the tools they need to advocate for themselves.

Current transportation not involving cars is highly insufficient. Bike lanes are exposed and dangerous, and public transportation systems while they aren't as bad as other systems across the country, are still slower and less efficient than driving a car. Given more frequent, faster, safer, and more efficient transportation, it doesn't force citizens to drive, providing options for those who can and don't want to, a good option for those who cant, and frees up roadways for those who want to drive.

There have been many instances where I’ve witnessed teachers and aides being extremely impatient and rude to students with different abilities. I am deeply saddened by that fact and I don’t understand why anyone would even be a teacher if they cannot handle those things. We need to better educate our teachers on proper protocols and procedures on dealing with students with different abilities.
