I believe my responsibilities as a teacher are believing in my students that they have the potential to become successful and preparing them how to become excellent citizens in society. Some of the steps would make sure to have the mindset of having an anti-bias lens, where I believe in my students and not let go of negative perceptions. Displaying equity, where I can provide the different needs of my students is essential for their education. For example, making sure to set high expectations for my students and giving extra support for those who need it. In my future classroom. Students may come from backgrounds, where their surroundings do not think his/her have the potential to become successful academically. I believe in nurturing and viewing potential in all of my students. One of the steps I would like to take is to implement teaching students the hard skills and the soft skills in my class. Spring states, " Success in college are dependent on non cognitive skills such as motivation, self discipline, stability, and depend ability perseverance and self-esteem"(104). As an educator, I believe teaching soft skills and hard skills education is vital because in schools, I do not see it in the classroom I observed. In society, students who graduate from a 4 year program, may have the risk of not finding jobs because of the lack of skills a student may have when they go into the workforce. Schools are pushing students to become academically "successful" by teaching students by the test. Also, higher education may not lead to more chances for jobs without the proper soft skills taught in schools. With the Perry Preschool study, it has challenged my thoughts on how I can prepare all students for college by teaching them life long skills. I would like to invest in making sure students are able to learn the soft and hard skills starting from the primary grades. In my classroom, I am reading stories with students about a topic that is a current issue or read stories such as social justice where students are going have a chance to become problem solvers. Problem solving is a skill that is needed in the workforce and will prepare students for higher education. With my responsibilities, I believe this is going to help students grow in their academics and skills needed for their future.

I believe that learning is an ongoing, rewarding, enriching tool that all students are capable of. Learning does not just happen in the classroom, but it also comes from the socialization, character values, and the opportunities of gaining knowledge. In the early school system, Horace Mann wanted to think of a method of how all students could have the equal opportunity to learn. However, with the creation of the sorting-machine model, the concept of tracking is an issue and relevant today. Joel Spring states, that “students from all social backgrounds enter school where they are classified and placed in ability groups and tracks that lead to jobs appropriate to student abilities” (2016). This practice is labeling and setting our children into failure. The student’s perceived ability is based on their social skills, social status, and their race or ethnicity. In block one, I learned that there are a disportionate rate in the achievement gap towards people of color. In my future classroom, I want to change the way of how school is tracking. I want to make learning accessible to all students by making sure students get their needs met as well as believe in their academics. At George Buck Elementary, there are students who come from low income families and lack of resources. As an educator, I would like to challenge myself to ensure learning to make sure students who are coming from low class to give learning that connect with their culture and give them empowerment to believe in their abilities .I would like to commit to encouraging my students so that they will realize that learning is a lifelong process. I would like to break this concept of how social class and income is going to determine their future. Learning cannot happen, until the teacher believes in their students have the equal and equitable opportunity. In my field experience there are going to times where each student is going to be on different learning abilities. My job as an educator is to make sure each child is able to reach success by me providing their needs. I need to also educate students on how they are going to empower and make a difference in their communities.

I believe that teaching is more than a profession where we teach subjects, but it's about encouraging our students, giving them the opportunity to learn and changing their lives positively. Teachers in society never look at the social justice issues that students go through in homes, communities, and in school. Teaching is how we can create the change in our students and the culture of the school system. As we discussed last semester, people of color, poverty, and people with disabilities are the students who face discrimination in schools. In my future classroom, I am going to have to teach students of all different races, abilities, and social economic classes. For example, in the readings, it discussed how special education students have not been able to attend schools, and they have limited resources. According to Pardini, she states, "Even though federal spending for special education continues to rise (from $3.1 billion in 1997 to $6.3 billion in 2001), the federal government has never paid more than 15 percent of the total costs"( 20 2013). Looking at this evidence, it has challenged my thinking and made me question of how I can accept and also show equity towards the special education students in the classroom. I would want to make sure my students who have a disability would have the chance to include inclusivity and having equal opportunities in my classroom. As an educator, my role is to make sure that I encourage students to make sure my students are not in the achievement gap, and not being labeled as a being deficient by students and teachers. As I am going to work with Mrs. Jones’ 2nd grade class, I want to teach the kids their reading, but I would like to enhance the student's confidence in their academics. In the classroom there are ESL and special education students that I work with in the reading centers. It is my role to teach them so be confident and giving them their needs. It is essential to connect with the students to their culture and to teach them how to become excellent citizens.

As we reconstruct our education philosophy , we can make students motivated to learn which will lead to success.

I believe the purpose of schooling is expanding the student’s prior knowledge, empowering their character to become excellent citizens by bringing awareness of social justice issues. As a future educator, I believe that we must commit to educating our students by making connections with the students and teaching for social justice. Many teachers that I observed are focused on only making sure the students are prepared for college and the real world by finding the best methods to make sure they pass the tests. The teachers focus on schooling where they teach to the test and never connect with their students. In contrast, In my classroom, I want to have meaningful discussions by viewing the injustices in the community and in history I want to ask the students, "How is this injustice"? "How would you solve and approach this problem"? In an urban school, there are going to be students who are going to come in with trauma and issues from home. I want to make school a place where they expand their knowledge by making connections, having students know their identity, and giving words of encouragement that they need to become successful. My role of a teacher is believing in my students are capable of success and guiding them on their journey where they can have an excellent future. There are students in school who give up because of what the media and statistics portray towards people of color which creates bias and inequalities. For example, in the readings "Stop the School to Prison Pipeline"states, " although white people is more likely to violate drug laws than people of color, in some states black men have been admitted to prison on drug charges at rates of 20 to 50 times greater than those of a white man" (2011). This statistics is the sad reality of what our youth are looking on the media where they feel ashamed and powerless. In the readings this is a story where a 11-year-old African American student was expelled for accident bringing in a boy scout knife by accident. This this the sad reality of what students face in classrooms and I as the teacher want to make students aware of these problems. In my future classroom, I would like to make school a place where I am able to address the social issues and also how we need to teach students to be advocates in their community .In the article, "The classroom to Prison Pipeline" Christensen " states, "we need to create a curriculum that demonstrates interest and understanding of our students' heritage by studying their literature or language or statistics that touch upon their lives"(2017). In my classroom, I would like to apply having different books in the classrooms where students are going to read about the issues in their community. Also, I want to also empower the people of color who are feeling dehumanized by society. School needs to be a place where we can teach our students that they can be activists in their communities and homes. We teachers need to be their guide for them to be the change.

I believe all my future students are capable of learning and becoming successful in their academic journey. School is one of the most significant influences in a student's social life that is going to shape their opportunities in their academics. Teachers have to know the background of the students and see their potential. I believe teachers play a huge role in the socialization in school where the teacher can influence and impact a student. In my classroom, there are going to be students who are going to come from different backgrounds and situations. For example, some of the kids in my classroom may have risks of poverty and even born with the pipeline prison. Students may come from homes that their parents show no little interest of their child’s acadmeics or may come from a poor background. To the connection to the readings, there are statitics that show the reality of what a child may go through and end up being in the pipeline.” A Black boy born in 2001 has a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison in his lifetime; a Black girl has a 1 in 17 chance” (121). As we discussed in class, there are individual agencies and structures that the students are equipped which can positively or negatively damage a student's chance of success. As an educator, my role is to have the belief that I know that all of my students are capable of learning which will build their esteem. Some practices I would like to commit is to be able to guide students so they will not fall into the achievement gap and the pipeline. A valuable exercise that I want to use in my journey as an educator is documenting the student's work and being able to see recognize the improvements that the students are producing during the school year. I also, want to do home visits with the students and get to know my students on a deeper level. For next field experience, I would like to have the mindset of seeing all the students having the capability of learning and advancing in their academics. As I am in working with the English language learners in their centers, it is my responsibility to take note of the improvements from day one to the last day of field experience with the students.

I believe students learn best when they have educators who will give them the confidence and encouraging heart for the students. In a classroom are going to be students who are not going to be motivated to learn because of how the school system is set up. For example, teachers are feeding the school prison pipeline by displaying the zero tolerance which educators need to focus on the restorative the justice. In the class sessions, we have discussed how there are teachers who dehumanize and see our children in a deficient way that is going to negatively impact our students. Educators need to focus on the intrinsic motivation for our students when they are learning. We need to focus on being a role model in the classroom. One way we can encourage our students to learn is making sure we are able to connect with the student' culture in our lessons and having students to have a voice in their classrooms. Christensen states, "It begins when we fail to create a curriculum and a pedagogy that connects with students, that takes them seriously as intellectuals, that lets students know we care about them, that gives them the chance to channel their pain and defiance in productive ways" (2017 32). This connection from the reading gives evidence of how we need to practice cultural relevancy in the classroom that makes sure that each student has a belonging to the classroom community. The way that an educator sets their classroom community is very important because it can influence the students learning environment. As I am doing my field reflection observations, I observed some teachers yelling at their students and not displaying the sense of community in the class. The teacher is yelling at the students because of the small behavior issues. By the teachers having poor classroom management, it can lead to student going into the prison pipeline cycle. The teachers should on how to heal the behavior in their classrooms by understand the root of the problem. From this observations, I want to find different ways of how I can represent an excellent classroom community in my classroom. Some ways would be taking them seriously as human beings by having the high expectations for our students. Also, showing the restorative justice of focusing on the process of healing than punishment. We as teachers, need to focus on being the light switch for the students in the classroom for to go off.

I believe my students will learn best in class when I show that I have compassion towards the students and have the passion to teach. The responsibility of the educator is making students are getting the academic opportunity to learn and believe in their academics. When students can see that their teachers care about them, then I believe my students are going to have the urge to learn. For example, in my field experiences with Mrs. Jones, I notice her being engaged with the students by talking in a passionate voice. With this observation, I can that the students had the motivation in wanting to learn. When I have my own classroom, I would like to show that I am passionate and have the positive attitude in wanting to be part of the community of the classroom. Another key to student's learning is becoming compassionate and being an advocate for them. I would like to let my students that I care deeply about them and that I am an advocate for my students. By the teacher dehumanizing and yelling at the students, that is going to turn off students. In class readings, we have talked about how we need to be activists for our students. Christensen states, "professionalism activism recognzies that we enter our role as teachers in a democratic society with the set of commitments and responsibilities to advocate for our children and ourselves for ourselves" (2015). In the article, Michelle and Amanda were able to raise their voices because they saw unfairness in the students. I would like to stand up for my students and foster their learning when I see inequality and inequity. As I am at George Buck, I would like to observe and take notes on how students learn. I would like to be the educator that is able to have the learning come alive from the students. This is when I am able to display CRP that is going to connect to their prior knowledge and connect with their culture.

I believe family and community should be displayed and promoted in the classroom. In a child's life, school plays a huge socialization and agent. When a class has a community and family based environment, that is going to help students learn and also alleviate disruptive behavoir. Throughout the semester, we have discussed how a teacher needs to set up their classroom where everyone feels they belong and have a sense of identity in the classroom. In class, we have talked about restorative justice and how it is important to practice it in the classroom. Erik Ruin stated, "Given the strengths of restorative justice, doesn’t it make sense to charge full steam ahead? Of course, but restorative justice depends on building community, rooting it in social justice curriculum, and integrating classroom practices with schoolwide practices"(2014, pg 7 ). This quote makes a connection of how restorative justice revolves around community building. In my future classroom, I would like to create an environment where it has a family atmosphere where students can empower and learn from one another. As I am going to do my field experience, I would like to observe how the teacher is teaching the class in a community setting. I can see Ms. Jones making an excellent effort on how she is able to make the classroom a community setting where students have roles in the classroom. Also, when I start my community project, I want to explore the communities that the students live in. This is important because I want to understand where the students are coming from so I can bring in a cultural connection into the classroom. When teachers bring culture into the classroom, it creates engagement and space for diverse learning. As a result, students and teachers have the oppertunity to gain more awareness in competency about their surroundings. When a community setting is placed in the classroom, that is when students are engaged to learn and feel connected.

I believe collaboration is critical for teachers to practice and showcase it in the classroom and outside of the classroom. I believe that in a community-based classroom, collaboration is an effective way for the student to grow in their learning and enchance in their social skills. For example, in my future classroom, I would like for students to work in groups with other students. Group work is a way for students to work collaboratively which students can learn the idea of teamwork and learn the communication skills. In a classroom, each student should work together and have a role in the classroom to ensure learning. Chris Edmin states, "To develop a cosmopolitan ethos in the classroom one of the first things a teacher must do is to identify the possible roles that everything that comes in into the classroom can take on it to function properly" (2015,107). Chris Edmin creates an argument and idea of how students need to take accountability for each other to ensure the academic learning. When students are working in small groups students each other to make sure they are aware of other peers development and their own. When I am a teacher, I would like to make sure students are able to work together that is set up like a community. In a community-based learning, the students are going to be engaged and interact with each other that is going to be joint productive. Students need to be active members of the community where they are helping their neighbors to grow academically together. In my 2nd grade classroom observation, there was a missed oppurtunity where the teacher did not allow students to work together. Instead, the students worked quietly on their worksheets, but felt frusterated because they couldn’t seek support from their peers.

Giving everyone roles and jobs to take care of the classroom is an effective example to start the school year. Another way to display collaborative ways would be the teacher being able to work with the parents. I strongly agree that teachers need to work with parents in order to make sure the student gets an opportunity to learn. Teachers put the blame on parents based on the student's academics. Teachers should also give roles to parents to adovocate’s learning. For example, I would like the parents to build their child’s learning community by assisting the teacher with the student’s centers and crafts.

Some teachers may conduct home visits and conferences and communicate with the parents to help a student in needs. As a teacher, I would like to make sure the students meet their needs by asking the parent for support.

I believe a teacher-activist is a critical role that I would like to produce in the classroom and all teachers should become activists for their students. In the classroom, there are going to be times where I am going to see students where they may come with trauma, learning disabilities, and English language learners where I want to empower their learning by being a guide through being an advocate. In Mrs. Jones’s class, I am working with the English language learners who need assistance in reading and writing. As someone who learned English until 10, I am able to emphasize with their needs and I am willing to help with their assistance. I tell the students with positive praises and know that that I am there to help them learn so they can build confidence. As I am going to do my student teaching, I will like to look for opportunities where I become a voice for those students in the classroom. I want to be a guide for those students and not give up on their learning. There are going to be times where I may have to advocate my students towards inequalities in the classroom and address to my principal such as lack of resources, unfair in the assessments. As I am codifying research for the community mapping project, I am looking at how I can see the lack of needs of students and bring awareness to teachers and community members. As a connection to the readings, it states, "To be teacher activists, we must speak against policies and leadership decisions that undermine our work and devalue our expertise about children and learning"(Garrett 2016).Teachers need to listen to the voices of the students to create connections and dialogues that will ensure academic learning. When I become an activist for my students, that is where educators are creating a space of opportunity and a chance for students to become excellent citizens.
