Auntie Ifeoma believes that Eugene cannot listen and accept things he doesn’t want to hear. Mama and Aunty Ifediora have a private conversation during a family gathering, and Kambili eavesdrops when they speak. Kambili is able to hear Auntie say, “Ifediora told him to his face what he felt. Ifedoiora was not afraid to tell the truth. But you know Eugene quarrels with the truths that he does not like” (95). Aunty Ifediora tells Mama that Eugene cannot accept the truth he disagrees with, no matter how ridiculous it is to disagree with. This shows how his high status and building ego affect his daily interactions and overall character. By being wealthy and a religious extremist, he always thinks he is all that. This leads him not to consider the other side of stories as he constantly thinks he is never wrong. This makes Eugene oblivious and less likable, as even his loving family members are annoyed at his behavior.

Eugene manipulates religion to cover his sinful actions, he takes advantage of the confession in order to forgive himself. One quote from the text is, ““Ave Maria. I am spotless now, we are all spotless. If God calls us right now, we are going straight to Heaven. Straight to Heaven. We will not require the cleansing of Purgatory” (107) This shows how eugene has gaslite himself into believing that by confessing his sins he has done no wrong; therefore, he has not learned that his actions were harmful.. This delusional image he has painted from himself has empowered him to make the same mistakes again. His actions reflect the way he interprets religion, meaning he uses it as an excuse for the way he disciplines his family. Because Euguene genuinely believes that “[he] is spotless,” he has learned nothing about the consequences of his sins, and therefore is likely to repeat them. Overall he doesn’t comprehend the true meaning and use of confession in catholicism. He uses it as a crutch to support his actions instead of accepting and learning from them.

The struggle between being honest and ignoring the truth is shown through how there is a difference between Eugene’s dislike for hard truths and Ifediora’s honesty. Kambili is eavesdropping on Aunty Ifeoma and Mama having a private conversation, Aunty Ifeoma says, “Ifediora told him to his face what he felt. Ifedoiora was not afraid to tell the truth. But you know Eugene quarrels with the truths that he does not like” (95) Aunty Ifeoma is explaining to mama that Ifediora was blunt and honest compared to Papa who bends the truth to fit his reality. For example, religion can be both good and bad, and Eugene only accepts that religion can be good. The metaphor “quarrels” symbolizes how papa changes from his powerful character Thus, Eugene cannot handle the truth and therefore dislikes Ifediora, because he cannot grasp the truth he doesn’t believe.
