They were often discriminated, and the Southerner's found a way for them not to vote, even thought the "Civil Rights Act" was in effect. 

During the Voting Right Act of 1965, the government watched elections, for fairness, and African Americans started holding positions in the government.

After the Voting Rights Act of 1965, African Americans had a say in American Democracy. The voting right act of 1965, achieved it's goal of letting everyone vote, especially people in the South.
