The more information you include, the more specific you are, the more services they will receive & in turn help them succeed.

data data data. The more you collect, the better off you'll be. You'll be helping to get a student the appropriate services, diagnosis, they're PLOP, learning style. The list could go on and on. Find a data collection tool that works for you and get to know it. The more you use the same means of collection the more you'll understand the data and have others to compare it to.

I'm in the right place. Talking to other educators about their journey, and seeing how much they care about every single student helps me to realize this is where I belong. I find myself feeling that exact same way about the students that I'm working with. I'd fight the world for them to ensure that they got everything that they needed to be successful, & happy. I believe in them & know that there is more going on than meets the eye.

There will be a lot of tough conversations in our future. Whether they're with parents, other teachers, coworkers, you name it. There is a lot of collaboration required for SPED teachers, and not everyone is going to get along or have the same perspective as you. You have to learn how to have tough conversations and leave emotion behind. (POSITIVE INTENT!)

Support staff are essential when it comes to a special education classroom running smooth. There are staff shortages EVERYWHERE and schools are no different. It is very possible that SECAs and support will be pulled from time to time. Give your classroom grace in these times and find a way to make it work. They may not be your most shiny moments, but it's important to stay in control of what you can and remain positive.

Sensory can be a saving grace for students (and teachers!) be sure to find out what works for a child to help them to self-regulate when they need to. Each student is different, and different things may be helpful to them. You may need to try quite a few things before you find the right fit!!
