By February 1854, anti-slavery Whigs had begun meeting in the upper mid western states to discuss the formation of a new party. One such meeting, in Wisconsin on March 20, 1854, is generally remembered as the founding meeting of the Republican Party. This was opposing what they thought was the tyranny of President Andrew Jackson.

Nast invented another famous symbol—the Republican elephant. In a cartoon that appeared in Harper's Weekly in 1874, Nast drew a donkey clothed in lion's skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of those animals, the elephant, was labeled “The Republican Vote.” That's all it took for the elephant to become associated with the Republican Party.

We oppose federal licensing of law-abiding gun owners and national gun registration as a violation of the Second Amendment and an invasion of privacy of honest citizens. Through programs like Project Exile, we will hold criminals individually accountable for their actions by strong enforcement of federal and state firearm laws, especially when guns are used in violent or drug-related crimes.

Republican Tax Cuts:

Overall, Republicans support a variety of tax cuts. They wish to increase the child tax credit, a credit that reduces your federal income tax per child that qualifies. They also wish to get rid of the marriage penalty, which is the term for when a couple pays more filing jointly as a married couple than they would have filing separately. Republicans want a full repeal of the death tax (also known as the federal estate tax, under which a tax is applied to the transfer of the deceased’s estate at the time of their death). The death tax takes a particular toll on family businesses or farms, where it is common that the family has to sell the business or farm to pay for the tax. In this situation, the employees and customers suffer as well, supporting the theory that overtaxing can harm American’s financial prosperity, as well as the growth of the economy. The Republican Party supports the housing industry’s efforts to make home owning easier, without setting quotas and giving preferential treatment. This is because they believe that lower taxes and lower interest rates could allow more Americans to be homeowners, which is in the national interest. They also believe in providing deductions on premiums of long-term insurance plans, with additional exemptions for elderly spouses, parents, or relatives that a family tends to in their own residence.

Current view on immigration

No Amnesty

The party strongly believes that providing amnesty to illegal immigrants only further encourages illegal immigration. The Republican Party seeks stricter penalties for illegal aliens themselves, as well as for those who help smuggle illegal aliens into the country, those who create fraudulent documents to prolong the ability of illegal aliens to stay in the country, and employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. They also support the right of border patrol agents to deport illegal immigrants without giving them a hearing before a judge.

This belief is one that the party has stuck to, even when it meant opposing their own. In the 2004 Republican Platform, the party spoke out saying that President Bush’s plan to implement a new temporary worker program, allowing those working as illegal aliens to apply for citizenship the same way as those applying from outside the country, would only deter those applying from outside the country to go through the proper channels to do so. Republicans stated that this measure would be providing unfair advantages to those who had broken our laws, and would be putting them on par with those who were working hard to obey the law.
