Says/does: Tells Akunna that there is only one God.

Quote: “There are no other gods, said Mr. Brown. Chukwu is the only God and all others are false.”

Attitude and belief: Believes that the leader of the church is God and there is no human leader.

Quote: “No, protested Mr. Brown. The head of my church is God himself.”

Actions/words: Mr. Smith says that the story of obanje was spread by the devil to lead men astray.

Quote: “ He condemned openly Mr. Brown’s policy of compromise and accommodation. He saw things as black and white. And black was Evil.”

Attitude/Beliefs: Mr. Smith believes there is only good and evil and doesn’t believe there is an in between.

Says/Does Mr.Brown is a kind and understanding missionary. He makes friends throughout his stay and connects with the people. The way he approached the village he was very mindful, calm and collective to their beliefs as well.

Quote: “ In this way Mr. Brown learned a good deal about the religion on the clan and he came to the conclusion that a personal attack on it would not succeed”(Achebe,181).

Attitude/Belief: He respected the Igbo culture and works to build relationships with the villagers. He establishes a school and a hospital, gaining their trust. With this attitude and beliefs they were more welcoming to him.

He is not religiously tolerant and is afraid of their belief system.

“The leaders of the Christians had met together at Mr. Smith’s parsonage on the previous night. As they deliberated they could hear the Mother of Spirits wailing for her son. The chilling sound affected Mr. Smith, and for the first time he seemed to be afraid” (187).

This quote shows that he does not understand the severity of what one of his members had done, in which he had killed a spirit. Also that he is fearful of their traditions and the consequences.

“They decided that Enoch should be hidden in the parsonage for a day or two. Enoch himself was greatly disappointed when he heard this, for he had hoped that a holy war was imminent… But wisdom prevailed in the camp of the faithful and many lives were saved” (188).

Says/Does: Mr. Smith is the opposite of Mr. Brown and does things differently in the church.

Quote:“Mr. Smith suspended a young woman from the church for pouring new wine into old bottles.” (Pg. 185). This shows that he is firm and strict on religion.

Attitude/Belief: This makes him treat the Igbo people different because he sees them as evil and doesn’t give them any grace for mistake. He doesn’t understand the culture difference between them.

Quote:“He saw things black and white. And black was evil. He saw the world as a battlefield in which the children of light were locked in mortal conflict with the sons of darkness.” (Pg.184).

Actions/words - Mr. Smith says the religion is corrupt which he believes that there is only one God.

Quote - “Mr. Smith had rebuked him in very strong language, and had not sought his advice that morning. But now, as he came up and stood by him confronting the angry spirits, Mr. Smith looked at him and smiled. It was a wan smile, but there was deep gratitude there.”

Attitude - Mr. Smith shows that he’s not fearful of the Ibo gods since he doesn’t believe in them and how doesn’t understand the Ibo culture.
