“O, full of scorpions is my mind!” I chose this quote as my original quote got taken by someone else. My friend Berkeley recommended I do this quote as she thought it was interesting and was her 2nd choice. She got her 1st choice, so I decided to use this quote.

First time I used the quote was with my friend Alyssa. We were driving and saw a homeless person on the side of the road. We started talking about the world and how much bad stuff happens on this planet, which troubles me, so I said the quote. Alyssa had the quote project too so she know what I was doing so she laughed and said that was a good time to use. Second time I used the quote was with my mom. I asked her if I could stay out past 12 with my friends, and she said no, which made me sad. Therefore, I used the quote, but she didn’t really understand it and just asked what that meant. I didn’t elaborate and just said don’t worry about it. Third time I used it was with my sister. We were talking about our dogs. I thought about how much I love my dogs and how I would be if they died, which made me say the quote. My sister didn’t really understand it and I also didn’t elaborate on it.

The first thing I connect this to is the War in Ukraine that started in 2022 and is still ongoing. According to an article by Reuters, “A declassified U.S. intelligence report assessed that the Ukraine war has cost Russia 315,000 dead and injured troops, or nearly 90% of the personnel it had when the conflict began, a source familiar with the intelligence said on Tuesday.” This figure makes me sad as I believe war is evil and these innocent people have died over nothing. This haunts my mind, thus showing how this quote fits. Another event I connect this to is Israel-Hamas war that is currently ongoing. According to AP News, “The Palestinian death toll from the war between Israel and Hamas has soared past 25,000.” This makes me sad for the innocent Palestinians and Israelis that are being affected by this war, making me say, “O, full of scorpions is my mind!” The last event this year I connected to this quote is Donald Trump trying to get reelected despite being a criminal. According to PBS, Trump “warned of a “bloodbath” if he loses in November” The fact that this man is a criminal and is still allowed to run and still has supporters haunts me, which connects to the quote.

I think this quote ultimately is describing the trauma that people carry in their minds. The significance of the quote in this play is to describe the madness of Macbeth and how his mind has been afflicted by his sinful deeds, which has turned him to madness. Macbeth being mad is like him having a mind full of scorpions. This project has deepened my understanding of its significance by showing me the different types of trauma people can hold in their minds and how no one is every truly completely fine. Everyone has their own scorpions within their minds.
