From May to December, I was conducting line distance transect sampling for gopher tortoises in south Alabama as part of a statewide population survey to use as evidence for listing the species under state protections. We used ArcGIS handheld devices loaded with GIS-developed maps that had layers of suitable and unsuitable habitat, elevation changes, water features, roads, site boundaries, and the transect lines on which we had to walk. When we found a tortoise, we dropped a pin at its location, took basic morphometrics, and described the area it was found. All data was saved as another layer on our GIS software.
