As we use persuasive writing to try and alter the opinions of an audience, we must understand why it is different to other forms of writing.

To create effective persuasive writing, we need to generate solid information to back up our ideas or opinion on a given topic. To back up our argument, we must gather, process, and apply set information on the topic that we have chosen.

Within persuasive writing, we use a selection of language techniques that help word our argument. These techniques enable the writer to make his/her point clearer, and therefore more influential on the audience.

When applying the research and language techniques, we can better persuade our audience to think the way that we do, as our ideas are clearly displayed with supporting evidence.

As explained, we use certain techniques within our writing to make it all the more persuasive.

- Hyperbole - An exaggerated statement intended to impress. e.g. This is the best chocolate cake in the world!
- Understatement - Opposite of the previous. Understating something for effect. e.g. That is the worst idea ever!
- Rhetorical question - A poised question used for effect, with no need to be answered. e.g How do you feel?
- Quotations - Direct excerpts of text/speech used from another source. e.g. Dr. Toms says "Influenza has been a growing concern for NZ..."
- Listing - A list of things within your argument to add effect. e.g. Here are the reasons I hate spinach: 1)... 2)... 3)...
- Imperative - A command. e.g. You must realise how wrong this is!
- Rule of three - Three words used in a row for added effect. e.g. Water slides can be fun, fast, and exciting!
- Statistics and evidence - Facts that you have collected to back up your argument. e.g. 18% of New Zealanders believe dinosaurs are a myth.

It is important in Persuasive writing that we use the correct pronouns that will include/exclude the audience.

This is important as we want to influence the audience to agree with our opinions and be against the things that we are against.

Pronouns to Address the audience:
Words we use to address the audience as a group that makes them feel included within your discussion. e.g. "Welcome, everybody...I would like that thank you all."

Pronouns to include the audience:
Words we use to position the audience within our discussion and make them agree with your argument. e.g. "We all know that this is unacceptable, and we require more..."

Pronouns to exclude the audience:
Words we use to distance the audience from people with opinions opposing our argument.

In persuasive writing, it is our aim to make others feel the same way you do about something. To assist our argument, it helps when we use language that is emotive. Emotive language is words/language that evoke a sense of positivity, warmth, and pleasure. Audiences will recognise the positive words that you have used and be attracted to what you are saying. e.g. "Soft, gentle rays of sunlight dance on the surface of my skin."

We can also use emotive language to repel ideas, and detract the audience toward something as we use negative words when describing it. e.g. "Sticky, harsh rays of sunlight sting my skin."
