He was a French inventor to whom the French government credits the invention of the first self-propelled vehicle or automobile. 
Cugnot received training as a military engineer. It carried out tests of models of vehicles powered by steam engines for the French Army, designed to drag heavy guns, a task that began in 1765.

Cugnot seems to have been the first to transform the forward-backward motion of a steam piston into rotary motion. In 1769 he got a version of his Fardier à vapeur (“steam car”) to work. The following year he built an improved version. His vehicle was said to be capable of pulling 4 tons and rolling at speeds of up to 4 km / h.
