Tennessee was very involved in the Civil War, it wasn't just involved for battles. It was mainly involved for it being in the middle of the Union and Confederates so, it was a meeting point for many battles. Tennessee also had about 31,000 troops go from mainly Eastern Tennessee to the Union army. Tennessee at first sided with the Confederates but eventually joined the Union after refusing to secede to the Confederate States.

Many battles clashed during the Civil War in Tennessee. One important one was The Battle Of Chattanooga. In Chattanooga, Tennessee on November 23, 1863. The Union attacked Chattanooga because it was a vital railroad hub in the time. The Confederates wanted to win because of the railroad junction Chattanooga had to offer. The Union had significantly won over the Confederates. Though this was one of the most important battles in Tennessee, some other battles were Shiloh, Shiloh happened after the Captures of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. The Battle of Chickamauga didn't happen in Tennessee it happened right outside in Georgia, but Chickamauga was an important reason that caused The Battle of Chattanooga.

One important person involved with Tennessee was Governor Andrew Johnson. He was the military governor of Tennessee. He was also elected as the 17th president of the U.S. and became a U.S. senator between 1857 and 1862. He was pro-war and a firm supporter of Abraham Lincoln. During the Civil War he was the only Southern senator to not resign and join the Confederacy.

General Braxton Bragg wanted to invade Kentucky in mid- 1862. Buell received lots of reinforcements and was issued by Washington D.C. that he would be replaced if he did not issue a counterattack. So, he moved in October and ran into Bragg's army in Perryville. He later got replaced once he failed to take advantage of Bragg's retreat. Nashville was then re-occupied by the Union on November 6th, 1862.
