It offers professional development on teaching reading, resources for students who are struggling with reading, multiple booker finders/guides/lists about different literary themes, podcasts, a library of different literacy apps sorted by topic/skill, and more. While students may not use this site directly, it gives the adults in their lives a wealth of resources to help them grow as a reader. This site is used by my school’s technology specialist and the students love it. It is a great way to get students writing using quality art and engaging technology. There are countless lesson plans, student activities, games, unit plans, and classrooms magazines to choose from. There are separate sections on this website for teachers, parents, and kids that all showcase various resources that are available. Scholastic takes the resources beyond just reading and writing, there are many other subjects that are showcased in this website. There are many items that teachers are able to purchase on this website to use in the classroom. The lessons and materials also outline which standards are being utilized in each lesson, which is wonderful! We currently use many of the scholastic magazines in the correctional facility and the students LOVE them. They are a fun and fresh way to introduce curriculum that connects subjects together all while developing the reading and writing skills that are essential. Starfall helps student begin reading with phonics.
Starfall has leveled readers and writing journals that are printable too!  I use starfall at home with my children to support their reading. My belief is once children become better readers they then also become better writers.  Starfall can support teachers and parents in this.

Students are then given lessons based on the results of this pretest. It is nice to be able to have everybody on a program that adjust to their reading level and need for challenge. Once students login, it is easy for teachers to see reports and track their progress. For writers on any level, I could see this as a valuable tool to help begin the writing process.  Punctuation is not included so ideas will need editing, but spelling is included to help struggling writers.  As a reading interventionist, I worked with many students who were reluctant writers.  Voice typing allows students to jump into the writing process. Every episode of the show and every game teaches phonemic combinations and uses them in many different ways. The games on the website are well-made, ad-free, and do well in teaching younger students letter sounds, compound words, and lots of other early reading skills.

I appreciate that this resource takes their ideas and instantly allows them to put them into an organized visual map.  A downside is that there is no editing feature. To add an idea students would need to add to their original bulleted list and then regenerate the mind map, which is just a few clicks away.

I also find that there aren't a ton on nonfiction options.  Capstone has a great selection of nonfiction AND chapter books!  My first graders love this site and so do my third graders. You can use this for research too. 
A negative might be that you do need an account but it is so worth it!
