The oppressive Spanish colonial authority played a significant role in the Filipino people's indolence. The Spanish authorities hindered economic and social progress in the Philippines through corrupt governance and oppressive regulations. With its extensive bureaucracy and restrictions, the colonial system made it impossible for Filipinos to develop and pursue opportunities. The lack of incentives and limited prospects during Spanish control contributed to the population's sense of despondency and apathy.

The stereotype was exacerbated by a lack of educational opportunities to which prevented Filipinos from acquiring the skills and information required for socioeconomic advancement. The Spanish authorities assumed that education would not benefit the "lazy" Filipinos, resulting in why there was not much investment in schools and educational resources.

Rizal cited extensive corruption and poor resource management as the main causes of the laziness of Filipinos. He condemned the Spanish colonial government's ineffective and unethical methods. According to Rizal, a culture of corruption and self-interest hindered initiative and hard effort, which gave the impression that people were being lazy.

A lack of access to proper education was a major contributor to Filipino laziness. Rizal highlighted the value of education in fostering people' and communities' intellectual and moral development. The Spanish colonial authority, according to Rizal, failed to provide enough educational opportunities for Filipinos. People's intellectual advancement and critical thinking abilities were hampered by limited access to education, making it difficult to break out from the cycle of indolence. This lack of education caused the cycle of poverty and held back socioeconomic mobility for the Filipino people.

Given the points made by Rizal in "The Indolence of the Filipino," it is clear that the stereotype of Filipino laziness is unjust and untrue. Despite terrible circumstances, the Filipino people have demonstrated their ingenuity, resilience, and dedication throughout history. We must adjust our mindset and acknowledge that the lack of progress is the outcome of a repressive colonial system, not intrinsic laziness. By empowering and offering equal chances, we can unleash the actual potential of the Filipino people and permanently eradicate the myth of indolence.

In our current society, there is an element of indolence. We cannot deny that indolence is indolence, even in its most basic forms, such as disobeying traffic rules, not forming a line when one is supposed to form, leaving trash behind when you can properly dispose of it yourself, procrastinating, and the countless "mamaya na lang" or "bukas na lang" syndrome. Of course, there are many who dislike working for the simple reason that they do not want to expend their energy and would rather stay at home doing nothing or on the street, in other words, idleness or sloth. Alternatively, it is frequently referred to as "tambay" in Filipino, and I can personally attest to that.

I put light on the notion that this period of national apathy is required to set in motion the wheels of our impending statehood.

Indolence, as Rizal has pointed out, is a long-term condition, and I agree. We battled hard to achieve actual independence and sustain our existing peace, thereby healing our laziness. However, even though the Philippines has a good educational system and democratic freedom, many Filipinos are idle and blame everything but themselves; as a result, we are and will continue to be a developing country. If cameras and video recorders had existed previously, we could have captured the hardworking and successful indigenous and shown it to the Filipinos of today to demonstrate that we still have the potential to surprise the world by resuming our earliest characteristics.

The lack of national sentiment brings another evil, moreover, which is the absence of all opposition to measures prejudicial to the people and the absence of any initiative in whatever may redound to its good. A man in the Philippines is only an individual, he is not a member of a nation. He is forbidden and denied the right of association, and is therefore weak and sluggish. The Philippines are an organism whose cells seem to have no arterial system to irrigate it or nervous system to communicate its impressions; these cells must, nevertheless, yield their product, get it where they can: if they perish, let them perish. In the view of some this is expedient so that a colony may be a colony; perhaps they are right, but not to the effect that a colony may flourish.
