These 40 years shaped the path to slavery's ending and concluded with the deadliest American fight, the Civil War. But, we do not have to forget all of the painful events leading up to this result...

After few years of working, the Missouri Compromise completely avoided by the Second Great Awakening because people came to believe that slavery was illegal and that they should abolish it for it was God's work. Consequently, Congress was drowned with anti-slavery, but, instead of answering them, they used the Gag Rule and swerved around all of the petitions. Later, in 1839, Jhon Quincy Adams proposed an Amendment that stated that after 1845 no individual will be born into slavery; this proposal was rejected. During these years, the South became scared and offered a $5,000 for an arrested abolitionist.
Source: Orthodoxhistory.org An Orthodox Baptism in the home of John Quincy Adams – and much more besides.

The Compromise of 1850 was a compromise that made California a free state and that would satisfy both the north and the south due to the strings tied to it. With the compromise, a stronger fugitive law would be made to ensure that slaves never left their owners. Other states, Utah and New Mexico, would also have the choice to be a free or slave state. With the entrance of California as a U.S. State, the United States would have control of the East and West which unlocked a lot of new trading posts. Arguably, California could have been one of the most important addition to the states because it connected them to the west.
Source: www.slideshare.net
