1. I learnt a new fact that banyan trees are a type of fig.

2. I learnt the differences between trees, shrubs and herbs.

3. I learnt more about the history of Singapore quarry and how it came about.

1) I found out that Sugarcane is actually a type of grass. The ones that we saw today was not sugarcane eventhough it looks like it, but it is actually known as the Fodder cane, which is a fast growing type of tall grass that is used to feed animals.

2) The best thing i learned today is that most plant can be classified into theree main categories, the Herbs, Shrub and trees. The game we played is interesting and i will definitely want to play it with my student.

3) Last interesting thing i discovered is about the leaves of the Teranting tree ( not sure correct spelling ) that will change from Big when young and gradully gets small when it grows taller.

• learning how to differentiate between a tree, a shrub/bush and a herb (as well as a climber, creeper and a palm).

• the different interactions within an ecosystem. In the forest, there’s usually a competition for light and land space. Other interactions would be predation and symbiosis (behaviours like mutualism, commensalism and parasitism). 

• a syngonium young plant starts out with just 1 arrowhead, heart-shape leaf. As the plant matures, it branches out to about 5 or more lobes per leaf.

1. A phenomenon known as “crowning shyness” exists, in which the crowns of fully stocked trees do not touch each other, forming a canopy with channel-like gaps.

2. The petai belalang has soil-fertilising properties, where it carries out nitrogen fixing and provides nutrients to the soil.

3. The changeable lizard is not a native species and it has “chased out” the native green-crested lizard out from its habitats.

1. Impact of the environment is important for example the recent oil spill has created a disaster for marine life. Evident in the black stained plastic bottles that we saw, was also alarming that oil can adhere to plastics.

2. The biodiversity of the Flora and Fauna at CC is very different from those at DF. We saw the symbiotic relationships and the echo habitat of how floral and fauna co-exist. Eg. The huge trunk of the Casuarina tree could be a habitat of many insects. The Miners that bores through the leaves creating an intricate patterns was also an eye opener of this Co sustenance relationship.

3. The Herb Garden we have at CC OALC is impressive. They are a variety of things that we are commonly used to like Curry leaves, Lime, Guava, Jumbu, Petai can all be found within our training center. It is a very practical tool for students learning and hands on how their plants look like.

Casuarina tree leaves form a thick blanket below the tree to prevent other plants from growing in this way it kind of reserve the nutrients for itself.

Seashore Mempari tree, has seeds that produce flammable oil, can be use in lamps.

I have also learned that the lion ant, if they bite humans, will only sting for a few mins before completely disappearing as their venom is not potent enough to affect humans.

There's alot of pictures and banners of the information on flora and fauna pasted along the fence.

Just next to the gate, there is this tree with alot of creeper plant that seems to climb very high with beautiful pink flowers.

Constant sound of the cicada in the forest. Sounds like they are nearby but can never see them

Sound of the traffic in the nearby road. Makes it feel like we are not far away from civilization.

I wonder how long has the security lady been working here. From my memory it seems like she has always been here since the fist time visited DF about 10 years ago. And I wonder what makes her want to stay here for that long

We feel like, we were able to react and respond to the students answers and feedback and not force the objective directly to the students.

Be present with the current environment and use the affodance in the environment.

We should have added some team based activity instead of all individual based.

Lastly we need to improve in making the activities sequence flow better. So that i does not seem like a different activity totally.

We used bingo and nature journelling.

We did not use 321 which was good and used mostly the affordances of the place.

Some improvements we could make is to frame the experience better, do a consolidation to relate back the activity to their lives and most importantly the execution of games.

we could have planned the games better so that the students can relate back to personal responses better and go more in depth.

Questions in the bingo could have been better and the flow of transitioning between games can be improved.

During debriefing, I would try to tie in students’ personal connections / response with regards to land reclamations e.g. how do they feel about land reclamation’s effects on the environment.

(If this were to be conducted for secondary school students)

I would link the effects of land reclamation to the bigger issue of climate change and sustainability, or mention about future reclamation projects in Singapore (Long Island).

Avoid mentioning the learning theme or outcome to students, experiential learning more important for them

Proper consolidation and closing the link to the learning outcome

Need to be able to remember the pedagogy well so that it will be natural and flows well. I believe it will be better after a few runs

Need to differentiate which Response to discuss and which is not required. Like some can be personal reflection, while some should be discussed.

To develop more story and ideas so i can use different tools to bring out the lesson objectives.

Remember to bring out the awareness and enthusiasm of the environment to the students before we begin and remember that we don't need to cover all the students 100% all the time.

-understand more about the surrounding E.g flora and fauna to make the student feel more connected

-show more visibility such as pictures,card etc to the students rather than the lengthy words.

-getting them to use their senses to connect with the place

Sharing facts that the students can relate or would trigger their curiosity within the place hence, they would want to explore and discover more about their surroundings.

-using the place’s unique affordances to allow students to directly experience the place

What the place are known for e.g flora or fauna

If there's history maybe show them the timeline or maybe a picture before and after.

Activities that has a connection to the place.

The students may share a story or memories of the place if they have one.

Have an activities that will involve all Thier senses.

You can also structure a game/question to make them think back and relate back to their past that is linked to the natural surrounding.

You can also make them think of an animal in the area that represents them the best.
