State Provide 3 adjectives that describe your main character in section 2, and provide a quote that demonstrates that character trait. Follow the quote with an explanation. 3.) Give 2 quotes that demonstrate situations in which the setting impacts the characters or events in the book. Make sure to explain each one.

One important event is when Samuel finds out that Master Wingfield has been keeping a ton of food and supplies from everyone, for himself, while people are starving. In the text it says, "And all while Master Wingfield eats his meat and drinks his wine." (Page 95, Para. 4) This shows that while everyone is fighting to survive, he's being selfish and eating and drinking whatever he wants.

Samuel has become more caring at certain parts in section two of the novel. "'No!' I yell. I lunge after him, grab his ankle, yank him back. 'Get under the mattress now!' I order him."(Page 78, Paragraph 5) Samuel realizes his colony is under attack by the Natives and he immediately orders James and Richard to get under the bed. If Samuel did not care he would not have told them to get under the bed he would have just let them leave the tent.

Another important event is when they were choosing where to settle because if they chose the wrong place they could upset the natives and a war could start. The text states, "Be careful choosing a site for the settlement"..."take great care not to offend the Virginia natives." (Page #66) This shows that the natives could be upset therefore they had to choose wisely or else things might be worse.

Work together and stand together. Some quotes to support this theme are, the text says
"This colony will need to stand on many legs..." This quote supports the theme because this is a metaphor for saying the colony will need to work together and stand together. The second quote is from the text and says "Get under the mattress both of you!" This supports my claim because Samuel is trying to protect people and help them and he cares about them. My evidence shows how the theme is work together and stand together.

The last important even for this book is the Indian attack against the colonists. In this attack, James dies, and that makes a huge impact on Samuel. In the text it says, "Captain, a man calls out, there are seventeen wounded, no one dead." (Page 80, Para 7) This shows that they think nobody died, and people are only injured. Also, in the text it says, "It is James, his thin body lying limp. No, says Captain Gosnold gravely. This one is dead." (Page 80, Para 7-8) This shows that James is the only one who died, and is going to impact a lot of people.

Samuel is obedient in the second section of Blood on the River. "'Samuel, do you think you can put some of that energy from your fistfights into learning to us a sword?' Captain Smith asks. My hatchet stops in midair. 'Yes, sir,' I say. I try not to sound to eager."(Page 85, Paragraphs 4 and 5) This shows Samuel taking Captain Smith's orders right away which shows he is obedient

Samuel is fearful because on page 84 it says, "What's that? Henry's voice startles me." The text is also stating how he is being choked and that he is being forced to say that he didn't see anything, "...but his hands clamp harder on my throat, I can't breath. Swear it, he demands. Swear it in God's name you will tell no one what you heard." (Page 84, Paragraphs 5,6) In the first example he is startled by somebody asking a simple question, and in the second example he is being chocked and he is fearing that he will die because he can't breath.

"They shoot Master Clovell while he is out hunting. He comes running back to the fort with arrows sticking out of him and dies soon after. They shoot and kill another man in the woods when he drops his slops to relieve himself."(Page 85, Paragraph 2) The setting impacts this event because the Natives are used to this land and they know their way through the woods. So that is how they were able to kill these men easily.

A quote that shows that the setting impact characters is, in the text it says, "We crawl out of the tent and find Abram lying there, an arrow in his side. I was just coming to bed, he says in a weak voice. I guess I didn't quite make it." (Page 80, Para 2) This shows that if the beds were closer to where Abram was coming from, then he maybe wouldn't of been shot.
