J. Cole music analysis

Sum up the most important analytical points from your music video analysis

J. Cole:

Characters
We are introduced to our main character who starts off as a bit of a loser. He is the kid with the new balance sneakers, who is meeting up with some other guys. It’s obvious that the shoes are new, and that he is maybe a little proud of having something nice and new that he can show off. But the other guys, who think they look silly, instantly made fun of him. But at home, he's met with love and attention from his parents.

One of the boys who mocks the kid with the New Balance sneakers is a central character in the story and serves as the antagonist. His life is deeply troubled; his mother struggles with alcoholism, and his father is emotionally distant and unavailable. These hardships shape his behaviour, making him lash out at others, particularly the boy with the sneakers, as a way to cope with his pain and neglect.

Conflict(s)/Crisis.
The poor boy has external conflicts. He faces bullying and mockery from other young kids. He also deals with the realities of poverty.

There is also an internal conflict - although he has a loving and supportive family, he feels unfulfilled due to his lack of material wealth. This internal struggle fuels his frustration and unhappiness, even though he lives in a stable and caring environment. As time goes on, his longing for material success conflicts with the importance he places on family and love, creating a deeper inner turmoil that he must confront and resolve.

Contrasts
In the music video, there's a strong contrast between wealth and poverty. The young boy who is bullied has far fewer privileges than his bully. However, as the video progresses, it becomes clear that despite his financial struggles, the boy is happier and lives a more normal life than the wealthy bully. Scenes show the bully's mother drinking and neglecting him, emphasising that material wealth can't replace the importance of love and family.

Climax
The music video doesn’t include a huge climax, but when we see our characters 10 years later we are shown a scene where our main character and his wife see his old bully get into a fight with his girlfriend, who is then picked up and arrested by the cops. The bully, who grew up with distant and emotionally unavailable parents, hasn’t broken the family pattern of a dysfunctional home life. Our main character hasn’t broken his family pattern either, but he is atleast a loving one even though he is unsatisfied with his lack of material goods.

Conclusion
Ten years later, he's still in the same financial situation, now with a wife and child. Even though he has a loving family, he's unhappy because he doesn't have the material things he wants. But when he sees his former bully getting arrested, he realizes he should be thankful for what he has.

It's grammatically incorrect and she's very immature in both her way of describing things and making decisions.

Decision example: her being with Tommy and not telling Louise who's supposed to be her best friend.

- The setting (the dodgy, dilapidated and greasy loft bedroom)
The sitting is very uncomfortable and awkward, but it changes when megans comes and it switch to chaos. But when Jane is alone in the bedroom, she is very uncomfortable because the room is so disgusting.

- The narrative technique and point of view (the significance of the first person narrator
The story is first person with Jane ´, we get to hear what she hears and thinks, and feels.

- The style of writing. It is completely different from Hemingway’s minimalism. What’s the effect?

The story uses swear words and makes it very real with many quotes. And we get very many times how she feels but it is very short. There is not any kind of symbolism in her feelings but just straight to the point. It is only when she tells stories we get to her in a slower mannar and more chill.

Olivia Rodrigo music analysis

Olivia Rodrigo: Drivers License

Character(s) (characterization)
2 characters: Olivia Rodrigo (heartbroken girl) and ex boyfriend.

The main character is Olivia, who experiences emotions related to a breakup. The characterization is built on fragile and heartbreak. The other important character that is never directly present is the ex boyfriend. The ex boyfriend's new relationship with the “blonde girl” creates an insecurity for Olivia. The ex boyfriend is characterized through the singer's perspective as someone who has moved on quickly. We don't know much about them, except that they once made promises of “forever”, which affects Olivia.

Conflict(s) (external and internal)
Olivia and her boyfriend broke up before she got her driver's license. “I got my driver's license last week Just like we always talked about”. She is very heartbroken about it and thinks back to how her relationship was, and keeps being reminded about it, since her having her drivers license was a topic in their relationship. Overall the conflict is Olivia's heartbreak, and she can’t seem to move on, even though the ex boyfriend seems to have moved on pretty quickly.

Contrasts

Crises + climax (if the song has a plot)
The main crisis is Olivia Rodrigo's inner crisis which is about her being very vulnerable and heartbroken. She is insecure about herself and wonders if she was ever enough for her ex boyfriend. We can see that when she sings about him being with another girl who has always made Olivia doubt herself. “And you're probably with that blonde girl Who always made me doubt”. She also has a hard time moving on because she still loves him and driving past the places they used to spend time together.

“Red lights, stop signs

I still see your face in the white cars, front yards

Can't drive past the places we used to go to

'Cause I still fuckin' love you, babe (ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)

Sidewalks we crossed

I still hear your voice in the traffic, we're laughing

Over all the noise”

Also dig into areas such as:
- Lyrics and language: Rhymes, imagery, alliteration, semantic fields etc.

Rhymes: The song has some small rhymes that are words in a sentence. “I still see your face in the white cars, front yards” Here cars and yards rhyme with each other.

Imagery: Olivia uses imagery to describe her feelings. Car metaphors: Her mentions of driving “I got my license”, “I drove through the suburbs”, “I drive alone past your street” Driving a car becomes a metaphor for both emotional movement and stasis. Driving alone when she had expected to do so with her ex boyfriend reinforces the sense of isolation.Red lights, stop signs, white cars: Red lights and stop signs indicate that she is stuck in her heartbreak.

Symbolism: “God, I'm so blue, know we're through” This line refers to Olivia's realization that the relationship is over and symbolizes that she feels extremely sad and depressed. The line shows that she is devastated but also fully aware that the relationship has ended and they are not getting back together.

- Film analysis: Composition, camera angles, cutting, colors, lighting, symbolism etc.

In the music video Olivia often uses the color purple, which can symbolize sadness and being emotional. It is often used when she is filmed driving the car, which can be because she associates her driving with her heartbreak, since she is being reminded of her relationship.

1.28 into the music video, we see Olivia sitting in a room covered by the words “you said forever”. This could symbolize her mind. That she is constantly and repeatedly thinking about those words he said to her. She also just sits in the room huddled together from a low angle shot, which shows that the words are bigger than her and she is like trapped by the words.

0.46 into the video there is a clip where Olivia is laying on her so-called ex-boyfriend's chest. She is looking up at him, and he is very distant, not looking back at her, but just looking up at the ceiling. This could mean that Olivia already felt that her boyfriend was distant from her when they were together, and this could also show signs of insecurity and overthinking from Olivia's side.

1:53

Every time we see Olivia drive she drives alone on the road which could symbolize her feeling left alone.

Music Video Analysis - Ed Sheeran

Character(s) (characterization)
The main character in the music video is a homeless girl living on the street.

Conflict(s) (external and internal)

She's homeless, and has a drug addiction as it says in the lyrics “Cause we're just under the upper hand. And go mad for a couple grams” She prostitute herself for money to her addiction “And she don't wanna go outside tonight. And in a pipe, she flies to the Motherland. Or sells love to another man”

Ed Sheeran the writer and singer of this emotionally deep song, comes into the music video (1:20 - 1:30) for 10 seconds where is starts showing him buying a newspaper or something like that and sits down beside the homeless girl, but then it clips over to a part where he doesn't buy it a walk past her instead.

External ydre - In the video it's obvious for everyone to see that she's not having a lot of money and literally is underclass in the society. People don't really recognize that she is there. In the clip where she sits alone and everyone is walking past her (1:47-2:06) do you see how obvious that is. The next clip she sits alone with tears in her eyes and no one stops to ask if she's okay or needs help.

Internal Indre - If we look at the video, the girl feels like she's stuck where she is, she's unlucky and the addiction makes her do things she dont want to do, to get money and maybe fill a void.

Contrasts

Crisis + climax (if the song has a plot)

There is a read thread through the video or a plot. In the start of the music video, the homeless girl's ghost is looking down at herself in disbelief and shock. We also see her dead at the end of the video. Her drug addiction and harsh life leads to her dying. Also he sings “It's too cold outside. For angels to fly. Angels to fly” many times, but suddenly he change the lyrics to “It's too cold outside. For angels to fly. An angel will die. Covered in white. Closed eye and hopin' for a better life. This time, we'll fade out tonight. Straight down the line” Which means that she's dead.

Also dig into areas such as:
- Lyrics and language: Rhymes, imagery, alliteration, semantic fields etc.

We start by being introduced to our main character- who i clearly in a bad place: “White lips, pale face. Breathing in the snowflakes. Brunt lungs, sour taske. Lights gone, days end. Struggling to pay rent. Long nights, strange men” The symbolic of this part of the lyrics is is both literally and figuratively “cold” - both for her being on the streets and freezing, but also from the drug addiction and that she's having an overdose. “And they say. She’s in the Class A team. Stuck in her daydream. Been this way since 18. But lately, her face seems. Slowly sinking, wasting. crumbling like pastries. And they scream the worst things in life come free to us.” She is young and beautiful, but the drug addition has left a mark on her, her looks and health are withering.

“It's too cold outside. For angels to fly”. can mean that the world is a cruel place that doesn't allow people to reach their potential.

“Ripped gloves, raincoat. Tried to swim, stay afloat. Dry house, wet clothes. Loose change, bank notes. Weary-eyed, dry throat. Call girl, no phone” that she has gone through and has done some difficult things in her life.
