Being an educator comes with a big responsibility. During my time at Fanshawe College, I was able to understand and utilize resources and learnings that have changed my perspective and skills to better understand early childhood education. 

I have gained invaluable research and learning about child development, program and curriculum development, responsive relationships and partnerships, health regulation, advocacy for children, families, the Profession of Early Childhood, and Research and Learning, which will reflect on my artifacts and research attached. 

During my placement at the Family Center Argyle and Salvation Army, I had the opportunity to apply my theoretical knowledge into practical experience. At the family center, I gained meaningful connections with the families and children, ensuring that all are well supported with the resources we can offer, connecting them to the community as this plays a significant role in a child’s development.

Reflection:

Child development is important in understanding children's strengths, interests, and capabilities. As an emerging educator, we come with big responsibilities and a role to best support children as they develop. These four artifacts discuss how children have different temperament traits that influence their behavior and how they respond to situations. As an emerging childhood educator, it is vital to consider different temperament traits of children to cater to their needs and to support them with their learning as children respond to the same situations differently.

Recognizing these differences allowed me to create a more inclusive and safe learning environment for children to support them best in their learning and their overall development.

Reflection:

Creating menu planning allowed me to meet the diverse needs of children and families. As an educator having an understanding that children have dietary needs is essential to their learning.

Documenting and Observing children was one of my favorite parts in the program as I was able to develop a plan that is in the interest of a child. My group mate Joshuel and I were given the opportunity to observe a child through pedagogical documentation, which shows how educators are dedicated to supporting a child in their learning journey and formative years. Growing up, we had a curriculum to follow that didn't really support our strengths and interests as it was teacher-led. With that being said, I see the importance of how Program and Curriculum development allows me to be reflective of my practice, cater to children's needs, and interests, and capture the learning process of children.

Reflection:

Responsive relationships and partnerships allowed me to build a safe and supportive learning environment for children. During my placement and work experience in Canada, I was able to utilize my skills in communication, observation, and listening, allowing parents, caregivers, and children to build trusting relationships, ensuring that they feel respected, seen, and validated. Some of the parents opened up and shared their experiences and challenges which allowed me to share my perspective and share resources that will best support their needs.

Secondly, I have gained invaluable insights about inclusion and diversity, which have allowed me to look deeper into other ways children need support in learning and foster a sense of belonging and identity. It can be

a chair that moves, a fidget toy, or simply modify ways to cater to children's needs. embracing children's unique background and culture allowed me to build lifelong relationships with the children and families.

Reflections:

Obtaining these certificates has allowed me to be informed of the policies and procedures to ensure safety in my practice and workplace. Obtaining the First Aid Certificate prepared me respond to emergency situations. WHMIS for workers talks about the procedures in a workplace to ensure safety for everyone for a hazardous-free environment.

During my placement, I was asked about choking hazards. I also experienced a concerned mom who was asking questions about food as she was anxious to introduce food that would cause harm to children. As someone who went through first aid training and as my placement offering one I I was able to give the right information to the parent. Being prepared and having these kind of conversations are important to the well being of a child.

Lastly, I was able to put into practice our duty to report as educators as I participated in a simulation role play that allowed me to utilize resources and in recognizing abuse and neglect.

Reflection:

Being an advocate for children, families, and the profession of Early childhood has given me a better understanding of collaboration with families and my peers. Learning about different community resources has allowed me to share resources to families in need to better support children and their needs. Specifically newcomers in Canada. Coming from a different background and rich culture I understand how it can be challenging to navigate through places and learn everything by yourself in a new country. By giving community resources we help children and families get the right support they need to settle and for them to thrive in a new community/ place.

Lastly, during my last term at Fanshawe my group mates and I were given the opportunity to advocate for our profession by addressing our concerns to an official sending out a letter and sharing our research to our peers during class presentation. It was an amazing experience as when we all work together we can make a difference in the ECE field to be seen and heard.

Reflections:

Continuous professional learning is vital to enhance and be reflective of our practice as an Educator. staying up to date and being informed and educated with practices that are relevant to our field ensures that we can provide children the right education for them allowing a supportive, safe, and guidance in their early years. with the artifacts attached, I believed that I am able to utilize these learning into my practice to be a supportive and reflective educator in the field.

I also learned how it is important to be a reflective practitioner as this can give us a detailed and clear perspective on what area we can best support a child. It is not an added responsibility but rather a joy to do as we are able to foster a supportive learning environment for children. “The way that you reflect on your practice is only going to be fruitful if you’re doing it in a way that feels good that feels natural.” (Grady, 2025)
