My grandmother shared that she did not attend school until she was eight or nine and she dropped out when she was around 10 as it was not strictly enforced at the time and that she was encouraged to tend to the home such as gardening, cooking, and sewing. My grandmother recalled that it was very difficult for her to attend school and that all communication was through the radio and that her Father did not think it was necessary for her to attend school.

My grandmother often joked that they used fire signals to communicate and played with sticks to entertain themselves.  It is so amazing how school was not an important factor at that time. This generation is known for it's resilience and I truly believe it. "It was a luxury having a TV and all the kids would come over to watch TV at our house," she stated. My mother in law shared that in school she recalled the teachers using television in the classroom for learning and reflecting which the class looked forward to as it was more entertaining than listening to lectures. 

Wow, sounds like this was a luxury to have during this era and it was not accessible for every household. It sounds like some teachers shifted their engagement style. My mother shared that the school also communicated by phone and would call to their home directly for any school updates or concerns. 

Unlimited calling was not accessible during that time, which is something that I did not think of. The need for a land line was also crucial for immediate communication but it sounds like it was sorely used for emergency only.
