He was a guy in his 20s, who wanted to break away from social conventions and civilization. It is crucial to know that he came from a wealthy family in which money meant everything; in fact his parents, Billie and Walt McCandless, ran a business in aereospace engineering. In addition, they argued a lot, and this was very disturbing for Chris and his sister Carine when they were kids. She was younger and they had a very strong bond. Of course Chris and his parents had a complete different point of view about how they should live their life: they were very materialistic while he hated consumerism. As a result, after he achieved a degree in social studies, he gave all his money to a charity and then he left everything and started a long journey trying to find his true self.

After that, he donated everything he had to a charity, then, he set off on a journey through the western states of the USA and Mexico to finally  arrive in Alaska.
During his journey he met some people that marked his life:
a hippie boyfriend couple, a farmer, a songwriter and an old veteran who asked him to become his adoptive son.

Instead, watching the movie, we can easily identify with Chris and imagine living his adventure. However, the book is much more detailed in the description of places and of Chris's daily actions. Moreover, on the one hand, the book explains Chris's point of view more effectively, for example, it focuses on his restlessness and on the final decision to come back to his family. On the other hand, the pleasant sound track and the beauty of the Alaskan landscapes make the movie amazing. Both in the movie and in the book the main ideals of Romanticism and the love of nature and freedom emerge clearly. At the end of the book, we learn that Chris's death could have been avoided. In fact, the banks of the river Teklanika were connected by a basket used one year before by the US Geological Survey to measure the river water depth. If Chris would have known about it, crossing Teklanika to safety would have been a trivial matter. Because he had no topographic map, however, he had no way of conceiving that salvation was so close at hand.

When Chris finds himself surrounded by the grand Alaskan wilderness, he experiences a feeling of awe. Similarly, Wordsworth is delighted before the sight of thousands of daffodils in the Lake District.
Furthermore, they find in individualism and solitude the best mood to appreciate the world. However, while Chris enjoys loneliness as a way to escape from his family and civilization, Wordsworth has a deep bond with his siblings.
Finally, Wordsworth underlines the nostalgia for his past - a sentiment that Chris doesn’t feel.

he wanted to cut himself off from society beacuse he believed that the people around him were hypocritical and selfish.
Moreover, he considered himself very different from the others and for this reason he used to feel unhappy and lonely, so he took the decision to leave in order to understand his real self and find happiness.

The bus was called "Magic Bus" because it proved to be a safe shelter. It was provided with matches, a rudimental bed, a bug dope and a stove. Moreover, Chris had other important objects with him such as 10 paperback books, 10 pounds of rice, a gun, tablets for water purification, a pair of rubber boots and an insect repellent.
He survived eating berries and going game hunting for squirrels, geese, ducks and porcupines.
