Built understanding based on research within educational psychology (Bjork, Dunlosky & Kornell, 2013) and education (Hattie & Donoghue, 2016). According to Bjork, Dunlosky & Kornell, 2013) an active learner is a 'sophisticated and effective learner' (p. 314). Therefore to become an active learner, one needs to develop self-regulation, self-direction and self-reflection. Therefore active learning is the application of self-regulation, self-direction and sef-reflection in one's own learning practice.
