Abrasion

Treated as if they are contaminated by being cleaned with soap/sterile solution and water. Apply antibacterial cream to limit infection.

Lacerations

Treat as if contaminated by being cleaned with soap and water. Dress the wound tightly with antibacterial cream and get stitches if it is necessary.

Incisions

Initial care is to make sure the wound is sterile and then close it with stitches,staples,etc because surgical incisions are usually deep. Apply a tight dressing so it stays clean.

Puncture Wounds

If something big is stuck inside you don't pull it out until you are in a controlled environment. Clean with antiseptic. Do an occlusive dressing. If you don't know when your last tetanus shot was you have to call your doctor or get a new one.

Avulsions

Clean with sterile water, and disinfectant. Get stitches if necessary. Occlusive dressing to limit infection.

Universal Precautions

No hydrogen peroxide unless necessary

Add a bandage

Apply ointment to area

Repeatedly clean with saline.

Infected Wound

If there is pus it is a sign it could be infected. You can also have fever, pain, heat, redness, swelling, disordered function.

If you have an infection that can be treated with antibiotics you can have that.

If you get a viral infection such as tetanus and don't treat it immediately, you can develop lockjaw and really bad symptoms.
