My biggest take away is that denial not only adds to burnout, but is a major sign of burnout. I am absolutely guilty of being the person that thinks I can do it all, overcommitting to things, and saying, "It's fine. I'll figure it out." This seems to be a common behavior in education and counseling, which means it is all that more important to become self-aware of when we are doing it.

If we are not taking care of ourselves first, we can't take care of others. In any helping profession, we have to be mentally and physically well in order to provide the best service to our clients. If not, it could impact the advice we give and the relationships we are trying to build with them.

Most importantly, I know that I need to set boundaries and limit my workload. While that is difficult between work, school, and kids, it is a necessity at the moment. I also like to journal. Sometimes this is therapeutic journaling to get out thoughts and emotions, and sometimes I just write to write. Last, grounding myself in nature always makes me feel better, whether that's spending the day at the beach or just walking in the grass barefoot for a while.
