Homework is a very good tool to use for students to build skills.

Three strategies of using homework include the following: preview homework, homework to deepen knowledge, and homework to practice a process or skill.

I assign weekly homework in my classroom. I find it meaningful to my kids because it is skills they need to practice on, and it's also something that parents can help with.

The book stated an amazing way to include technology into homework assignments. While the idea is great, I feel like I can't assign technology based homework because many of my students do not have devices at home. Probably 1/3 of my class do not have a computer, tablet, etc; therefore, I could not assign technology-implemented homework for the whole class. In the book, students who were previewing their homework would view multimedia screencasts that would allow students to view new material.

Homework to Deepen Knowledge

This strategy strives to get students to think outside the box and to gain those higher-order thinking skills. On my math homework, I do have one problem per night that is a critical thinking problem. It is usually multi-step, and students may have to do one or more operations. It's good for parents to see their students completing problems like this and be of assistance if needed.

Homework to Practice a Process or Skill

I feel like this homework is very beneficial in any of the subjects I send home homework in. For example, it's good for students to practice their spelling words by writing them down, spelling them outside, making words out of play-doh, etc. It's great practice! Same thing with math problems. Students need to build math fluency, just like they do with reading fluency. The more they practice, the better that they will be at them and quicker! They won't have to count on their fingers because it they automatically know it from practice.

Technology can boost any assignment making it more engaging and fun. For my students to preview homework (assuming they DO have technology at home), they could go to our Math website www.pearsonsuccessnet.com. For each topic, there is always a topic opener video that is about 3-5 minutes long just giving an overall view for the upcoming topic. My students would have the assignment of getting on the Math website to view the topic opener, and write down something that stuck out to them. I'm giving them the opportunity to choose their homework.

Homework to Deepen Knowledge

Students can go to mathplayground.com and click on 3rd grade then Math Word Problems game. This game will give students a word problem, and they will work the problem out on paper then answer the question.

Homework to Practice a Process or Skill

This homework strategy could be completed by students getting on our math fact website xtramath.org, and completing math facts as quickly as they can. It is timed, so it builds math fluency.

These are a few tips to use in your own classroom!
