The deflation is that they are taking the fact that the driver took the life from a man, and ruined the family because he drank and drove. The issue is a big deal but the poem is treating it like its not a very big deal. The surprise is that one of the fatalities was to the authors dad. I thought it was just someone writing a poem to inform. The mock encomium is used because usually you see people praising the people who drink and this time its assigning blame. There is an understatement because in most drunk drivers they are too drunk to care that they shouldn't drive. There is an incongruity because the man killed someone's dad and you don't expect someone to write a poem about it really. There is invective because they are kind of mentally abusing the driver that killed their dad.

The point of view is from a kid, or the child of the innocent man that got killed. The whole poem has rhymes at the end of each stanza. There is imagery when it talks about the cars rolling and catching fire. There is pathos, you feel really bad that they lost their dad to a drunk driver, like in Full House how they lost their mom to a drunk driver. There is a sense of nostalgia because they wish their dad was still alive, not dead because of a drunk driver. There is ethos because you wonder why the driver thought it was ok to get behind the wheel after they drank or why they went to the bar alone, people don't go there for the people, thats for sure.

I think it is really sad that two families lost a father. One to bad decisions and the other from sheer bad luck. Drinking and driving is one of the worst things that can happen to a family in my opinion. It's a known issue, but nobody is actively trying to change it. I've had family members that would drive under the influence, but thankfully they made it home. This reminds me of the goggles you wear that are simulating being drunk because it says his vision is blurry. This also, for some reason, reminds me of 'If I Stay' I don't even remember what caused the families accident but I feel like it was from a driver under the influence.

The mock encomium is like they're saying congrats, you learned your lesson on drunk driving, but you learned it too late. They are blaming you for what you did. The irony is that they only learned one lesson, but the poem says that in life you learn of the good and bad, the ways of evil. The understatement in it is when you accidentally kill someone its a burden never to be forgotten. I think its more than a burden, its a part of you. Something you cant get rid of. There is an incongruity because the kid was underage, an 18 year old that killed a 17 year old. There is deflation because the mom screaming about her dying child still doesn't quite do justice for what the parents feel. The last sentence has many satirical devices used, one of them is grotesque like a genie in a bottle, the parents got what they wished for (their child to learn what they were trying to teach them) but like the genie, there was a twist- the child killed another child.

There's not really any rhyming scheme to this poem. There is assonance at the beginning of each sentence at the end. There is repetition at the beginning of each sentence. There is ethos when you think of the driver, you wonder why if they were the designated driver they thought it was a good idea to drink if they knew they were supposed to drive. There is kind of some nostalgia because after the accident, they kind of long to be younger when their parents told them not to drink and drive. There is pathos because you just feel so awful for both families in their different situations. There is imagery when it says her car just came out of nowhere.

Like the Drunk Driver, I think its sad a family lost a member, their 17 year old daughter. Not only did one family lose their daughter, but one also lost their 18 year old child because they are going to jail for a very long time. Drinking and driving is a sad thing. Society is trying to change the fact that minors are drinking and driving, an 18 year old went to jail for drinking and driving, society is trying to make change. I relate this to a family friend who drove four wheelers and got in a very bad accident because they were drunk. I also relate this to our school before arrive alive had a student come in and tell of us how she got in an accident because she drank before she drove to work and now is paralyzed. This also relates to every day things like your parents telling you not to do drugs or something and then you do and suddenly you're in jail for meth possession and you stay for a really long time and then you're off to rehab.

There is an understatement when it says they lost their life for someone else's life. Not only they lost a life, so did their friends and family, it impacts everyone not just the person who died. This has an incongruity because the person who wasn't even drinking ended up dying. You hear about that every day there are innocent people dying because of other peoples choice to drink and drive. This has diminution because its taking the man only caring about his bottle of jack and making it not a big deal, its making it like that's all anyone cares about (and that's true for some people, but not everyone.) It is ironic when they said they took a fall because of alcohol but it wasn't even them drinking. There is mock encomium because the guy is kind of blaming the driver for killing him and putting his family through all the pain. There is deflation when it talks about how his mom is dealing with it, she most likely would not just cry, but rather wail and scream because her son is dead.

The point of view is from the dead person, and they are confused. The end of the stanzas have rhymes (except its not really in stanza- form, so the end of where each stanza would be rhymes.) The way the author implies the drink of wine took his life kind of has personification in it because obviously a glass of wine can't hit you with a car. The whole thing is an anecdote because it is a brief story of the dead person. There is sarcasm because the dead person is kind of making fun of the fact that all the guy cared about was alcohol. There is a paradox because it doesn't seem true that the innocent person could die but they did.

I think its unfortunate that again, a family lost a life of a loved one but also I feel bad that the driver could continue to live his life with only the knowledge that they hit and killed someone, drunk driving is just so awful. Society wants to change people who drink and drive. It ruins lives and most of society knows this. There is a statistic that says that on average 27 people die a day, that could be 27 innocent people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time, or it could be the driver who was intoxicated. It also connects to a statistic that says someone is injured every 120 seconds due to dui. Another connection was that a few years ago, almost 10,000 people were victims of drunk driving.
