The Daily Bread Food Bank is a non-denominational Canadian charity organisation that strives to end hunger in urban communities. The organisation is based in Toronto, Ontario, and feeds thousands of low-income people a year. The Daily Bread Food Bank is the largest food bank in Canada and was founded in 1983 by Marie Tremblay.

How it started

In the beginning, Marie Tremblay was in India in 1975. She thought of it has a very good experience. She went to India out of awareness with the poor. Marie Tremblay wanted a first-hand view of the hunger that was in India. Therefore, she started the food bank in India.

Marie Tremblay had an early retirement in 1981 because she wanted to get into some social justice ministry. In 1982, she saw a small local food bank down in Colorado Springs. Marie then contacted some people who would be interested in helping out. She thought, ‘If there is extra food that is edible, it should be reused and not thrown out.’ People had a right to food and what Marie did was social justice itself. On January 8, 1983, Marie had a meeting every week then for two or three months. In February of 1983, she had a meeting of 40 agencies. The forty reps agreed to have a food bank to supplement the food the people there were already getting. Most of them were trying to feed people already, but if they could have a central clearing house, that would suit them fine. Despite all the improvements and mistakes she made then, Marie felt that she made a commitment, and this motivated her to stick with her original plan.

The Council of Marie's community was quite supportive. She was trying to raise money for this thing to got off the ground. She went to the churches and different Catholic organizations and foundations and finally decided on a place. On January 1984, that they started distributing food at the Daily Bread Food Bank and the food bank has succeeded ever since.
