My parents were the last ones from their individual families to come to America. My dad had two siblings waiting for him and my mom had a small number of cousins waiting for her. During our first years, my dads' siblings went back to Mexico and he was alone to fend for himself and us. The first couple of years were the most difficult ones, we didn't have enough money to eat or go buy clothes at the best stores. We lived in a house with so many people. My parents had to work long hours to scrape by and provide a roof over my head. My grandpa and my aunt attended college in Mexico but it's very different from the U.S. They were not able to explain what I was about to experience or give me tips on how to actually do it. I've had to figure it out all by myself and learn from the mistakes I had made. I honestly remember that being the main cause of why I used to get grounded. There were points where I was genuinely confused on what talking back meant, because if they'd ask me a question while giving a lecture for example, "do you think this is funny?" and I would respond "no not really" they would take that as talking back. In my mind I was just responding to their question. It was okay to call adults by their first names the only thing is we couldn't "tu" them, we had to "usted" them. "Tu" is more of a term used for friends or anyone close to your age.
