I had an opportunity to create a comprehension assessment based on the poem Mother to Son. Universal accommodations to implement are the use of visuals, so students have better contextual understanding before answering and the use of a bilingual dictionary in the case of a more involved assessment. Differentiated instruction meets the needs of ELLs so they have a more equitable opportunity to thrive, this type of instruction is consistently changing as students improve their skills. For the comprehension portion we will continue to revisit theme and main idea and how to find those in the text. Encouraging students to make notes of what they know and to re-read it many times to look for common vocabulary or repetition is a method that will prepare them for any assessment.
