Visit UIva Island

Ulva Island Tour is an absolute “Must Do”

The Island is part of Rakiura National Park and now free of introduced animals and is fast becoming a glimpse into New Zealand’s ancient past. Several species of threatened birds have been reintroduced to this open sanctuary and are doing very well.
Our standard tour is around 4 hrs and includes all transfers, DoC Fees & etc.Tours can start early morning or late afternoon when the birds are at their best And if you’d like longer on the Island we can arrange for you to stay on and be picked up later.
You will need walking shoes or sneakers, warmish clothes…. layers are best as much of the walk is under heavy forest canopy… and a coat is a good idea. 1 South Sea Hotel, Elgin Terrace (on the waterfront), ☏ +64 3 219-1059, southsea@stewart-island.co.nz. Licensed 11:00–03:00 although the bar closes earlier on quieter nights. This is the only pub in town and is the hub of the community. Drink prices are reasonable compared to the mainland; in a lot of cases cheaper, with tap beer priced from $4.50 NZD upwards. The bar has a Happy Hour Tu 17:00–18:30 and bar food is always available, or you can get a meal from the restaurant.

Partially private land and partially national park, Ulva Island is possibly the closest to pristine of any area of New Zealand open to the public. In 1997, the island was declared rat-free, following an eradication program, and extirpated birds have been reintroduced to the island. The birds include the South Island saddleback (tieke), yellowhead (mohua) and Stewart Island robin (toutouwai). In addition to birds the general forest health has improved significantly. Many orchids can now be seen that are difficult to find on mainland Stewart Island. Water taxis and a ferry service regularly make the short trip from Golden Bay. You can take yourself around Ulva or take a guided tour.

2 Ulva Island ferry.
