Charlie, an Eleven year old girl, has to stay with her aunt and uncle even though shes never met them. Charlie didn't like her family very much because it was "broken". She always wished to have a family that loved each other. However when she first meets her aunt shes unsure at first; sweetly, her aunt, Bertha tries everything to make Charlie happy. Then Charlie was given the option to stay with them and without hesitance she agreed. In the end, Charlie is left with her family who adore her and love her as their own.

"'Then Bertha let out a contented sigh and said, I never in my wildest dreams would've thought we'd have a family like this, would you, Gus?'" (O'Connor 226). This quote is important because Charlie realizes how much Bertha and Gus really care about her, and that she has a "'Real family'", "'A family that wasn't broken'".

Charlie makes a wish everyday hoping that it will eventually come true. She wishes the exact same thing every time, which is wishing she had a new family that loved her and one another.

Charlie never trusts people and always rejected another persons kindness, only showing harshness and hatred towards them. Like the stray scared Beagle, who runs away from people and is always scared and rejecting a humans kindness.

Charlie drew little hearts and stars on her representing a hint of what she was wishing. The star showed she was wishing and heat showed that Charlie was wishing for love by a family one day.

Charlie faces external challenges with her sweet environment and her anger issues. Since everyone around her has a very sweet and loving personality, she has to learn not respond to anger but instead adapt to kindness.

Throughout the story Charlie learns how to stay calm, be kind, and to love and trust others through other people. Bertha and Gus develop into her guide lines as well as parents. With the help of the two Charlie is able to learn how to change her attitude.

The main internal conflict is Charlie and her trust issues. With her parents who hate each other, Charlie has a hard time trusting with opening up her true kind self and loving others. The hatred filled environment effects Charlie greatly, leaving her with the need of love. The internal struggle involves Charlie learning how to love and trust people again.
