It is often used where a database would be more appropriate. That data can then be analysed in a spreadsheet, or other platform technology. The conversion of genes (and other codes) to dates is because the column was formatted as ‘General’ and Excel made a ‘best guess’. The Turing Way presented some work on errors present in different versions of Python packages. Just because it is open source, does not make it correct. Many proprietary packages have experts who work to ensure their offering performs correctly. It is this expertise they sell. 

I think it would be helpful to separate the use of open source, because it is possible to see how the calculations are performed under-the-hood, from the availability of these proprietary packages and accessibility to then in other institutes that are less well funded. 

We can still publish our scripts for correctness.

Software and Data Carpentries are excellent resources, but seldom taught and with small class sizes. 

R and Python have a steeper learning curve than other packages due to their flexibility. Many researchers require a higher level of abstraction since their expertise is in their daily activity rather than in learning to program.

The institute is then open to reputational damage. A careful line needs to be drawn between blindly assuming the authors are fraudulent and either trying to cover it up or terminating the authors’ contract, or supporting a full and fair investigation.
