The period roughly begins when the Dutch Republic was split from the Habsburg Spain regions to the south with the Spanish recapturing of Antwerp in 1585 and goes until about 1700, when Habsburg authority ended.

During this period Belgium had an artistic boom. 
It gave birth to the immensely popular Baroque Flemish school of painting. 
The cities of Bruges and Antwerp (home to Rubens, Van Dyck, and Jacob Jordaens) and Ghent were the richest in the region and became artistic centres.

In the height of Burgundian influence in Europe, the Low Countries became the political and economic centre of Northern Europe, noted for their crafts and luxury goods. A majority of the works created in that time were destroyed during waves of iconoclasm in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today only a few thousand examples survive.

He is one of the most notable representatives of the Early Netherlandish painting school. His work contains fantastic illustrations of religious concepts and narratives. Within his lifetime his work was collected and widely copied, especially his macabre and nightmarish depictions of hell. His pessimistic and fantastical style cast a wide influence on northern art of the 16th century, with Pieter Bruegel the Elder as best-known follower. Today he is considered a hugely individualistic painter with deep insight into humanity's desires and deepest fears. Only about 25 paintings are confidently recognised as his, along with eight drawings.

A painter and printmaker from Brabant, known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. He was a pioneer in making both subject on focus in large paintings. His choice of themes were innovative and original for his time, as he was from the first generation of artists to grow up when religious subjects had ceased to be the natural subject matter of painting. He also painted no portraits (the other other popular choice) . He traveled to Italy and returned to settle in Antwerp.

In the end of the 19th century Art Nouveau style was created by the Belgian architects Gustave Serrurier-Bovy, Paul Hankar, Victor Horta and Henry van de Velde. It was coined as a style in Paris.

The Art Nouveau style was vastly popular in Belgium until after the First World War. Numerous houses designed by Victor Horta survive to this day and are in UNESCO's World Heritage Site.
