This indicates that he is an anti-hero because he has flaws in that he freezes when he needs to be moving and doing something much like a more typical hero would do. He also goes against authority in the novel by keeping books with him which is illegal because he wants them not because needs them showing how selfish he could be making him an anti-hero since he is going against the greater good of ditching books entirely.
