On January 1, 1863 The Emancipation Proclamation granted freedom to the slaves in the Confederate States if the States did not return to the Union by January 1, 1863. In addition, under this proclamation, freedom would only come to the slaves if the Union won the war.

Lee’s formal surrender to Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, brought the war in Virginia to an end.

On Aug 29 - 30, 1862 in Madison County, KY was fought between Major General Edmund Kirby Smith against Union major general William "Bull" Nelson's forces. In August 1862, Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith’s Army of Kentucky with 6,500 Confederates moved through eastern Kentucky in support of Gen. It was a part of the Confederacy's most concerted effort to capture the Commonwealth of Kentucky, its men and much needed material, for the Southern cause. This lead to a Confederate Victory. After a running fight, the battle ended when Confederate forces overran the Federal's last position in the city of Richmond. Hundreds of Federals were captured, and only a few escaped, including the wounded Gen.

It featured the first opposed river crossing in American military history as well as the Civil War’s first instance of urban combat. with a Confederate victory. The Union Army of the Potomac suffered more than 12,500 casualties. Lee’s Confederate army counted approximately 6,000 losses.

Grant in the spring of 1864 and this battle lead to an Inconclusive end.

Hood southeast of Atlanta, Georgia. The Union victory in the largest battle of the Atlanta Campaign led to the capture of that critical Confederate city. This lead to a Union victory. Confederate Lt. Gen. John B. Hood’s attack on Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman’s troops at Atlanta was repulsed with heavy losses.
