Marra Farm Giving Garden by Julie Colando

What did you learn by doing the service learning work at Marra Farm? What do you now wonder about (organic agriculture, urban farming, food security, the power of community & hard work, etc.)? Did you learn anything about yourself? What is your big take-away? (Check your writing to make sure it makes sense & for spelling, capitalization and punctuation.)

11-1-16
On this field trip I learned that sorrel is really sour, and weeding is really hard work.
I now wonder if we should have more urban farms to provide more food to food banks. I think this because we learned thousands of food is given to people who need it every day.
I also learned that I can be productive and work hard when I set my mind to it.
My big takeaway from this field trip is many people need healthy food, and we should pay more attention to this problem.

11-2-16
At marra farm Iearned all about how to weed and how hard it is to be a farmer. I mean i only did it for about four hours I can't imagine how much work it would be to do that every day. But I think it was totally worth it because it felt so good to help other people!
I was very interested in how long marra farm had been around. It was about 100 years! I was wondering that if it took are are class that long just to get out the weeds I Wonder how many hours it takes Scott ( the Pearson who taught us and works there) to harvest all of the food, because he said that in summer he can harvest about 350 to 600 pounds of produce in a day?
My big take away is that so many people have to eat disgusting unhealthy food or very little food, and that we can help that we don't have to be rich or famous to help all we have to do to help is voulenter at a local garden or by having are own garden and sharin the food and just by sharing with friends and family what we learned.

I learned how to use Horry Horrys
(that means dig dig in either Japan, or Korea.) Urban farming can be hard in the city, builders are CONSTANTLY building buildings that take up lots of space, so its harder to find a place to farm. Marra Farm is VERY important so since there's more houses and less food to eat, so people don't have enough food to eat! and food is important, because it keeps you healthy & alive!

Being a farmer is hard work . Using the hory hory is using body weight to get to the bottom and pull the root. The hoe is slamming it to the ground then pull it back. The Mara family was the first people to even use the farm and actually built the farm. The farm was there for over 💯 years. There were more trees and not many houses around. Pesticides are to keep bugs off the plants that why you need to rinse the vegetables.

I think the Marra Farm was a great experience. What I loved most was using the hori hori knife to uproot the weeds. We also had to deal with giant sunflowers with stalks that were as hard as iron! They did not break under a small amount of force and took five minutes to cut through. Then, when we had a large amount of weeds and chopped sunflowers, we loaded the plants into a wheelbarrow and dumped them into a pile of compost. The scuffle hoes were extremely hard to use. They took care of the small weeds perfectly but the larger ones held firm to the ground. I also learned that they farm a variety of crops ranging from sorrel to beets. The land had actually been farmland for over 100 years! That is a long time. I learned that I love to work and get muddy. It gave me a sense of accomplishment. It was so fun that getting dirty was a very minor issue. I learned that once you get a bit dirty, you won't care about getting dirtier. My big takeaway is that people all around the world are suffering from poverty because they can't get healthcare. So, they get sick and a larger issue is that they also can't eat healthy foods because they don't have enough money to afford good food. So, Marra Farms donates to charities, soup kitchens and homeless shelters so homeless people can have good organic food that is healthy for them.

Before this field trip I did not know how to use all the tools and I also did not know that it had been there hundreds of years a go. The trip made me wonder a lot about urban farming. My big take away is that their are so many people going to food banks everyday and the community really needs to do something about it. Overall I had a really fun time and got to learn all kinds of things and got to taste some new food that I had never tried before.

My favorite part of being at Marra Farm was using the hoe like thing to weed and that is fun, but tiring. Scott has a tough job working at that farm (almost) every week. I learned that once all of that land was farmland and now it's just that area and it was kind of small compared to that whole neighborhood being farmland and that is a lot of space.
