One (4hr) classroom session to include lecture and vaccine administration practice lab

First injection observed by the RN Educator or an RN in the department

10 additional IM, SQ and ID Injections observed by licensed member of the department staff

Does the MA demonstrate safe injection competency prior to administering vaccines independently (Day 0)?

Does the MA demonstrate understanding and adherence to all steps needed for injection compliance 30-60-90 days after initial training?

Are all the essential steps in the vaccine administration process sustained at 6-12 months post program launch?

Do the MAs, Providers and Managers report a high level of satisfaction with the new workflow and confidence that vaccines are administered safely?

Present program plan overview to department leaders, support staff, providers and labor representatives.

• Obtain feedback and address questions/concerns

• Obtain approval to launch and agreement to support

• Share program data and feedback from other service areas that have successfully implemented a similar program

Direct observation of the MA demonstrating injection technique on a mannequin arm in the classroom session with the instructor.

Direct observation of the MA demonstrating the complete vaccine administration process with an RN Educator or designee on a patient in the back office setting.

Audit of MA vaccine administration competence at 30-60-90 days post instruction by the department RN Manager or designee.

Random audit of MA vaccine administration competence at 6mos-1 year post instruction and then annually by the RN Educator.

Department Managers to obtain feedback from MAs, other staff and providers in Unit Based Team meetings and convey that to the Nursing and Clinical Practice Teams at 30-60-90 day intervals. Program adjustments to be considered based on feedback.

Feedback to include a survey rating level of confidence and satisfaction with the new pilot program.

Labor/Management misalignment

Availability of staff to train and perform competency assessment

Staff/Management ability to release MAs and support auditing with other competing priorities

MA resistance to added duties
